Safest Cities in Alabama

Home of the Crimson Tide and a cornerstone of the Civil Rights movement, Sweet Home Alabama crime rates can vary enormously from one community to the next.

The average state crime ratings are:

Alabama Violent Crimes per 100K- 524

State of Alabama – Average Violent Crimes

(per 100,000 residents)

Alabama Property Crimes

State Average Property Crimes -Alabama

(per 100,000 residents)

However, averages can be rather misleading.  While there are a number of areas with relatively  high crime rates, such as Birmingham,  (which didn’t submit figures to the FBI in this report) Mobile, Huntsville, and Montgomery-  there are a number of communities in Alabama with outstanding reputations for low crime rates.

Alabama’s safest communities are well below these numbers.

6 of our 10 safest neighborhoods in Arizona experienced less than 25 violent crimes in 2017.

Helena, Satsuma, Southside, Moody and Orange Beach all reported 225 or fewer property crimes.

For anyone looking to make a home for themselves in “The Heart of Dixie”, this list of Alabamas’s safest cities is a great resource.

The majority of the time, smaller towns and cities are known for having lower crime rates.  Some of the safest neighborhoods in Alabama, are medium-sized cities. Vestavia Hills, Pelham, and Alabaster ranked well in both categories…commanding the 1,2 and 3 positions respectively in our 2nd category.

Because larger cities typically struggle with many challenges that smaller towns and communities might not have to deal with, The Home Security Advisor recognizes some of the larger cities in Alabama that have provided safe communities for their residents.

Methodology

To find the most secure towns and cities in Alabama, we reviewed the most recent (2017) FBI Uniform Crime Report figures. Only towns and cities with five-thousand residents or higher were considered. It should be noted that not all communities report their data to the FBI…so, of course, these communities could not be considered.

Both “Violent” (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and “Property Crimes” (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft) were tabulated.  In order to reflect the gravity of the criminal activity, these figures were weighted. Violent crimes have been factored by .75 and property crimes by .25.

This number would be then divided by the population in the community. For comparison purposes, we normalized the mathematical finding to reflect weighted criminal offenses per 100,000.

Although no rating system is perfect, this reflects a relatively accurate picture of the overall safety and security in the community. If you’re considering moving to Alabama, these cities are amongst the safest towns and cities that you could choose.

Additionally, it is important to understand that certain areas inside any community may have significantly lower crime rates than others. This is especially true in more populated cities. We recommend that you carefully investigate specific neighborhoods within the community and communicate with law enforcement to obtain a better overall impression of the security and safety on a local level.

To get more detailed information on keeping your family and home safer, we recommend you take a look at some basic Important Tips for Home Security…and consider a  professionally monitored home security system.
