How to Cancel ADT Contract – ADT Cancellation of Service Q&As
ADT is the largest home security company in the country. For the most part, the majority of their customers are satisfied with the service. But, like any large company, they have their share of complaints and negative online reviews. While some are service-related, the vast majority of them result when, for whatever reason, it comes time to cancel ADT Service.
What is the ADT Cancellation Policy?
As is the case with any contractual obligation, it is important to understand the ADT cancellation policy before making a long-term commitment. In this article, we’ll examine how to cancel an ADT service and what steps to take to cancel an ADT contract.
ADT Contract Facts and Features:
Standard ADT Contract
ADT contracts are 36 months. (except in the state of California, which is 24 months) ADT will install a basic system valued at $850 for little or no money upfront. They recover their costs and earn a profit over time by requiring a minimum monitoring service agreement of 3 years. After the ADT contract is satisfied, in most cases, the ADT service is provided on a month-to-month basis. However, it is always advisable to closely examine the ADT cancellation terms on your contract closely, as some authorized ADT dealers may include an auto-renewal clause.
3-Day Right of Recission – How to get out of an ADT Contract when the system was just installed…
All ADT contracts are subject to a 3-day “buyers remorse” period. The buyer has the right to cancel an ADT contract, without penalty, within 3 business days from the date the contract is signed.
This is a clause that was mostly designed to protect unwary buyers who may have fallen prey to unscrupulous door-to-door sales tactics.
For example, If you were pressured into a sale and told that they were giving away a “free” system to “model” homes in the area or told that ADT just bought out your existing security company, and the installers showed up, unannounced, to “update” the system, you may be a good candidate for cancellation under this provision.
Be aware, that it is important to act quickly before 72 hours have elapsed.
Relocation
It is not necessary to cancel ADT service if you relocate. The ADT Movers policy stipulates that they will install a basic new system at the new location with a new 36 month ADT service agreement.
6 Month Service Guarantee
Isn’t it just basically a 6-month ADT Cancellation Policy?
As part of the ADT Cancellation Policy, they include a 6-month service guarantee. However, it should be noted that this is not the same as a 30-day money-back guarantee like you might find with Frontpoint or some of the other DIY security companies. It states that the customer is entitled to a full refund without penalty, IF, ADT is unable to resolve a system or service-related issue within 6 months.
The terms are a bit vague, but, it applies only when ADT has been given sufficient opportunity to replace, repair, or otherwise remedy the situation. If you ultimately exercise this guarantee, you will be responsible for returning the system before a refund is issued.
Canceling ADT Service Contract
You can cancel ADT service, at any time by contacting customer care. You are required to give 30 days’ notice, and your service can be terminated on the following billing period (after a full 30 days). Depending on whether or not you are required to pay any additional penalties or fees depend on how much time is left on your ADT service agreement
ADT Cancellation Fee
If you are still under contract, the ADT cancellation policy dictates that you are responsible for 75% of the remaining balance of your contract after you cancel ADT service. For example, if you have a $1200 balance on your ADT contract, you can buy out that contract for $900. While it may sound like a lot, there are many companies that require 90-100%.

The first step to cancel ADT service is to call your ADT authorized dealer or ADT Customer Care at 800-238-2727. They will review your contract and calculate your ADT cancellation fee. They will go over the details and let you know if they require written notice.
How to Cancel ADT Service Contract With No Fees
- 3 Day Buyers Remorse Period – If you cancel within 72 hours or 3 business days, you can be released from your ADT contract without penalty.
- Contract Escalation – ADT retains the right to increase the monitoring rate after one year. However…if you file a written objection to the rate increase, within 30 days of the written notice of a rate increase, ADT must either waive the increase and honor the original rate, or release you from the ADT contract if they refuse to waive the rate increase.
- Re-Assignment – As part of the ADT moving program, You may be able to avoid incurring an ADT cancellation fee if you are able to get the new homeowner to take over your contract.

“3. INCREASES IN CHARGES. ADT has the right to increase the annual service charge at any time after the first year. If I object in writing to the increase
within thirty (30) days of receiving notice of the increase, and if ADT does not waive the increase, then I may terminate this Contract effective thirty
(30) days after ADT’s receipt of my written notice of termination. In this situation, I will not have to pay the contract termination charges described in
Paragraph 2 above.”

ADT , omg. You need some smart people to work in customer service.
I have been on the phone for 11/2 hours just to cancel my service.
They’re just keep transferring me to relocation about 6 times. They have been wasting my damn time. And I am still on phone waiting.
Poorest service ever. I have been with ADT for 31 years, this is ridiculous.
I have been with ADT for nearly 18 months and I truly believe it is the most absolutely unreliable company I have ever dealt with. When it was first installed, IT DID NOT WORK, later a different person came out and completely redid the system, telling it it was VERY INCORRECTLY INSTALLED, IT DID NOT WORK. I went for several months just paying the monthly fee until once again I attempted to get it up and running. Yes another person came out and it worked for 2 weeks. The system has not worked since April of 2021. I have spent over an hour on the phone tonight, talking with 4 different ADT employees and have achieved absolutely nothing. Oh they have agreed to send someone out, but I’ve been that route too many times already. There records do not even agree with the equipment in my home. I am paying $100’s of dollars a year for nothing. I want to know to know if there is a penalty for termination? Regardless I want this contract terminated.

If you are within the 1st six months, you may be able to take advantage of the ADT Cancellation clause that allows you to cancel an ADT contract without penalty if they were unable to provide satisfactory service at your location. I have tried canceling my contract with ADT and was told that I agreed online to continue under a loyalty program. I don’t remember doing this or if was done in error. When I called on May 4 2021 trying to cancel they told me that it would cost me 1500. to cancel the contract. In the meantime they have sent out a technician to replace a battery on an outside monitor and after three different attempts it exploded. I have been told that I can’t cancel the policy and I don’t feel safe with the equipment.
Previous owner left security system in this townhouse. I would like to remove it but I do not know how. It shows a radio error and I do not like it operating. How can I turn the whole thing off.
