ADT Merger
Updated August 16, 2017. >>UPDATE<< In May of 2016 it was announced that Protection 1 would be merging with ADT. (Get details on ADT Monitoring promotions) ADT was acquired by an affiliate of private equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC. Upon completion of the deal, ADT will be merged with Protection 1.
Ultimately, the companies will operate under the ADT brand.
Consequently, if you are looking at Protection 1 for a new security system, we recommend that you check out the current ADT Security Packages, directly, and visit our review with the current ADT offers.
Protection One/ADT Offers
Protection 1 has been around for 28 years…and enjoyed a long-standing reputation for providing quality service.
While both companies continue to operate independently for the time being, ultimately they will be consolidating and operating under the ADT brand. Transitions of this sort tend to create a great deal of customer confusion in regard to contractual and service obligations.
If you are considering a Protection One Security system, you may want to avoid potential issues and opt for an ADT Monitored system right out of the gates.
Aside from the ADT merger, they have seen a great deal of change in recent years. They have introduced a DIY home security program and have begun an aggressive campaign of door to door marketing.
Consequently, many fear this may threaten their A+ standing and lead to an erosion of consumer confidence.
Door to door marketing companies have a track record of experiencing a rise in customer complaints due to misrepresentation and misleading claims. It will be interesting to see how this impacts online Protection One Reviews.
Our Protection One Review summary and detailed editor’s reviews are followed by a section for Customer Reviews and an FAQ section in which we compare them with some of the best home security companies.
If you currently have a Protection 1 Home Security system or have had any interaction with their door to door marketing tactics, we hope you will share your experience with our readers below.

Protection One Review
Reputation and Credibility
Protection 1 is the 6th largest security company in the U.S. The home office is located in Wichita, Kansas and they have over 2,500 employees with offices in many major markets across the country. They have been in business for over 25 years and enjoy an A+ BBB rating and a 97% customer satisfaction rating.
In recent years, they have introduced a DIY Alarm program, as well as begun employing a door to door sales force. It should be noted that the more aggressive door-to-door sales approach has resulted in mixed online Protection 1 Reviews. It has created lower customer satisfaction and created significantly higher customer complaints with other companies.
Note: In May of 2016, Protection 1 and ADT announced a merger. While the companies will continue to operate independently for an undisclosed period, ultimately, much like Brinks, the companies will consolidate and operate under the ADT brand. HSA will update this review to reflect the impact of brand integration as circumstances warrant.
It is not uncommon for customers to experience service and billing issues while companies undergo complicated transitions during a merger. Consequently, many of those seeking a professionally installed system might want to avoid the prospects of transition to the ADT brand, and opt for an ADT monitored system from the beginning.
Monitoring – Protection One Packages and Pricing
They require a three (3) year monitoring contract, with a full portfolio of 24/7 professional monitoring options ranging from $34.99/mo. for basic monitoring to $54.99 for cellular interactive monitoring with cameras.
They utilize their own network of five UL Listed, Five Diamond Certified monitoring service. Standard monitoring rates and equipment packages for their professionally installed systems are as follows:

Video
And for an additional $5 a month, they will integrate Video Surveillance into the package.
All packages require a 3-year monitoring agreement, after which you will own the equipment. The latter 2 also includes an extended equipment warranty. The cellular monitoring will provide protection in the event that the phone or broadband lines are cut, or otherwise compromised.
They no longer use their proprietary “e-secure” app for interactive services…which had garnered rather dubious ratings in the past. They have opted to transition to the more highly rated Alarm.com interactive services which is more universally supported and is compatible with iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows. Pebble, Kindle, I-Pad, and Apple Watch devices.
Premium packages include Z-Wave communication for home automation capabilities and advanced features such as Geo-Location services and Crash and Smash capabilities. However, these features are unavailable on the lower end packages.
Protection One Pricing and Equipment
The basic equipment package is comparable with most other national security providers. Protection One now offers 2 Gig security equipment. While not as well known as some of the other more widely used brands, they are an “up and comer” in the security equipment industry and are well regarded, competitively priced and reliable.
It’s touchscreen user interface is intuitive and user-friendly…making it as easy to use as an I-Pad or I-Phone.
The website lacks transparency regarding equipment costs and one needs to call for current pricing and product offering details.
Customer Service
They place a strong emphasis on customer service and enjoys a 97% customer approval rating. They offer online support as well as 24-hour customer service via phone and internet chat. For those who prefer to speak to a representative, they do not have a complicated IVR system but guarantee that a live person will pick up the call and answer within 10 seconds.
The Live Chat function requires that you disclose personal information, and is more of a lead generation tool than a source of additional information.
They employ their own certified technicians and do not utilize 3rd party installation and service personnel. They undergo a complete background check and Protection One utilizes a Tech Tracker program that will e-mail a picture of the technician and estimated arrival time.
Most customer complaints center around the difficulties of canceling contracts. If the contract is canceled, the customer is responsible for 100% of the balance of the contract.
In regards to relocation, the equipment remains in the old home, and Protection One will install a new system at the new home and apply for a $150 credit. This may result in significant charges.
“My wife and I signed up with them 2 years ago. We are moving to a new home 1 mile away. Their rep assessed our new house already equipped with a good alarm system and proceeded to assess us a new activation for $200 and also for every single window that are already wired, and charge us for a new box. Ultimately, they wanted a $900 to “transfer” service.
What’s worse is that if we decide not to use them anymore, we are still responsible for another year’s worth of payments for the old house! They did not give us a copy of the contract, which apparently says that we’re locked in for 3 years! There is no contract termination fee; rather, they are going to fully charge us 15 months of cost ($500).”
Excerpt is taken from complaintsboard.
While they do not have a 30 or 60-day return policy, like some of the best DIY alarm companies, they do have a 14-day return policy, which is subject to a $79.00 restocking fee.
Protection One Review Summary
There is a wide array of products and features incorporated into Protection 1 Security solutions. They are a reasonably good choice, especially for those who require top-notch customer service. However, online Protection One Reviews are somewhat mixed when it comes to pricing and contract terms.
If one requires more than just a basic system, upfront costs can be significantly higher than some of our other Top 5 Alarm Companies. The monthly monitoring rates start at $34.99, for basic landline service. This sounds OK, until you find out that it is just for the most basic landline monitoring.
For cellular monitoring with remote mobile management via their App, it is a whopping $49.99/mo!
In addition to being more expensive, the lack of site transparency and the fact that the company is involved in a rather complex merger- with a somewhat uncertain future- may be reason to take a step back and more seriously consider other options.

Protection 1 Security Review - Video Transcript
The Home Security Advisor’s Protection One Security Review
Protection One has been in business for over 30 years and was the sixth-largest security company in the US, before merging with ADT in 2017. They continue to operate interdependently… which is sometimes cause for confusion. Protection 1 has an A+ Better Business Bureau rating and provides state-of-the-art monitoring services through 6 redundant monitoring centers.
Monitoring rates range from $35 to $55 dollars a month depending on the service and requires a 36-month contract.
Protection One Security Systems are fairly expensive and can manage a wide array of security and home automation equipment that is professionally installed and serviced.
Online Protection 1 reviews are something of a mixed bag but are overall fairly positive.
While Protection One is reasonably well known, if you are looking for a professionally installed system, we would suggest that you opt for the more well-known brand ADT…or, if you want the best in home automation- take a look at Vivint or Link Interactive…
If you don’t like contracts and want a more reasonably priced DIY alarm system with NO Long-Term Contacts and premium services…check out Frontpoint.

They include the ability to integrate with Amazon Alexa and utilize IFTTT technology, as well as incorporate exciting new advances in facial recognition and custom motion detection zones.
The latter two help Protection One ADT customers to better customize and control notifications. This ensures that the system notifies you of potential threats and issues…without the constant superfluous notifications that are common amongst earlier generations of camera equipment.

Protection One Home Security – Common Sensors and Components
Protection 1 Security Systems can be equipped with a comprehensive selection of components. You can customize your system to fit almost any situation and budget.
Protection One reviews indicate that customers appreciate the fact that the systems are fully expandable. It is easy to expand a basic system and build upon it when your needs change and/or your budget allows.
A list of the major common components follows. We have included the more basic sensors that are typically found in a starter wireless home security package, as well as a variety of Protection One sensors that you might want to add to a more comprehensive customized system.
The Protection 1 Basic Wireless Home Security Package
The Control Panel Hub
Some systems come with a separate base unit and keypad. However, the majority will integrate the two. You still find very basic units with pushbutton controls, but most will offer a touchscreen display. Protection One typically installs and all in one, self-contained unit, but, they do have the ability to install systems with individual keypads and control panels.
Touchscreen Panel – Most top wireless systems come with some form of touchscreen panel where you can arm and disarm your system and manage any connected devices. The panels can be mounted on the wall or set up with a desktop display mount. Many will have an internal cellular antenna that can function as a primary or backup means of communication.
Cellular Communicator – Sometimes the cellular communicator may be a device all on its own. It can be used, in some cases, to keep connected to the app as well as the monitoring center. The advantage of a cellular connection is that it stays on in a power outage and can’t be cut, unlike regular phone lines and cable.
Window/Door Sensors – Otherwise known as contact or entry sensors. Each sensor is two parts, one that goes on the door or window frame, and one that goes on the door or window itself. One is a magnet and one is a transmitter. When the magnetic field between the two is broken, a signal is sent to the main unit. It is usually recommended to place sensors on all doors and the most vulnerable windows on the main floor.
Motion Sensors- Motion sensors detect movement inside the house. They typically screen out smaller objects (below 40 lbs.) and can be placed in larger common areas in the home where an intruder might pass.
Glass Break Sensors- Glass break sensors, as the name implies, can detect the sounds of glass breaking, as intruders will often break windows to gain entry. They are not typically included in basic packages, but can sometimes be swapped out and often used instead of motion detectors when there are larger pets in the home.
Keypad- Keypads are used to enter passcodes to arm and disarm your system. In many systems, they are integrated into the main hub. They should be placed on the wall or near where you most commonly enter and exit your home. Secondary optional wireless keypads can be placed in master bedrooms or other areas where one might want to arm or disarm the system
Panic button- Panic buttons are often included on the main keypad. They can immediately alert the monitoring station of an occupied medical, fire, or personal threat or emergency. There are also separate wireless buttons or pendants available which can be activated anywhere with range of the base unit
Key Fob- Often referred to as keychain remotes, key fobs work with most wireless security systems so that you can arm and disarm them even away from the keypad. Some key fobs can also include a panic alert feature.
Yard Sign- Yard signs can serve as a deterrent. They alert anyone that the home is protected by a Protection 1 alarm system. While some people argue that this will ward off would-be intruders, others argue that they may provide insights as to the age and make of the systems to a savvy criminal. Realistically, they are more likely going to move on to easier targets.
Window Stickers- The same arguments arise when it comes to window stickers. Some experts suggest that it might make sense to use signs and stickers from a different company if you are concerned.
Siren- The majority of security system touch screen panels or base stations have sirens built-in. We recommend sirens of at least 85 decibels. Auxiliary sirens are typically available for larger homes or systems which don’t have built-in sirens
Environmental Sensors
Top wireless alarm companies provide equipment that will allow you to monitor a variety of potential threats within your home. Typically, each of the components below can be integrated seamlessly into the system and monitored right through the system’s app.
Smoke Detector- In the event of a fire, a wireless smoke detector will automatically send a signal to the central monitoring station if no one is home or if they are unable to get to the phone. Many of them also incorporate a rate-of-rise heat sensor which can detect rapid increases in temperature. This is helpful in extreme temperatures if cooling systems fail, or if there is a flash fire that doesn’t have a lot of smoldering smoke.
CO Sensor – Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, colorless, and odorless gas that can be lethal if ingested in large quantities. Wireless alarm systems equipped with monitored CO detectors will alert you of dangerous levels of CO even when you’re not home.
Smoke/CO Firefighter Module- Already have standard smoke and CO in the home? Some wireless home security systems are compatible with smoke and CO alarm modules that can detect the sounds of your existing smoke and CO alarms going off and alert you via your mobile app.
Flood Sensor- You may be able to prevent major flood damage if you can catch leaks as soon as they happen. Flood sensors, sometimes called water leak detectors, can be placed near the dishwasher, washing machine, sump pump, or any other areas where floods can occur.
Heat Detector- While temperature sensors may be built into smoke alarms, they can be sold as separate devices that alert you of rapidly rising temperatures in your home, which could indicate fires. It is often a good idea to use these in a garage or near the furnace, where emissions tend to set off smoke detectors.
Low-Temperature Sensors- Low Temp Sensors can be set to monitor if the temperature dips below 45 degrees to prevent frozen pipes. These can be placed on exterior walls where the plumbing runs and in the coolest areas in the home that might be vulnerable to sub-freezing temperatures.
Protection One Security Cameras, Appliance Modules, and Smart Locks
Indoor/Outdoor Cameras- Wireless security cameras allow you to monitor and record what is happening in and outside of your home. Most wireless alarm systems offer a variety of camera options for both indoor or outdoor use. The current standard is 1080P HD resolution which is motion-activated and offers night vision. Protection 1 cameras are also available with two-way voice capability and some even offer Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can distinguish between persons and objects such as pets.
Micro-SD card- While most cameras offer cloud storage of video clips, (at a price) some cameras come with storage capabilities on micro-SD cards. These are typically purchased separately, gaining up to 64 GB of local storage.
Video Doorbells- Video doorbells integrate a doorbell and a camera into one component. They may operate through the existing doorbell wiring or function as a stand-alone unit with a rechargeable battery. Many of the better systems are motion activated and include 2-way voice to allow you to speak with your guest through the system. If it is incorporated into your wireless alarm system it can be operated from your control panel or directly through your system’s app. These are a popular add-on to enable wireless security system owners to monitor packages dropped off at the front door…esp. during the holiday season.
Appliance and Light Modules- These are separate modules that plug into the existing 110v outlets that enable you to control lighting and small appliances right through your wireless home security system. You can turn lights on and off, start the coffee in the AM, raise the shades and turn on fans right through your app. The best wireless security systems even let you set up rules or scenes which will let you automate a whole series of events when you issue a single command.
Smart Locks- Never worry about placing a spare key under the doormat again. Smart locks can be locked and unlocked remotely. Protection 1 smart locks that can be managed with your Protection One App so that your doors can lock when your system is armed, ensuring that your home is truly secure when you leave the house. Some systems can even be set up to unlock the smart locks automatically when the system detects that you (and your phone) have driven in the driveway!

Alternate Options for Protection 1 Sensors
Non-Reporting Uses for Protection One Sensors
Most Protection 1 Reviews don’t discuss it, but, door and window sensors can be used to protect more than just doorways. Consider mounting sensors for extra protection in some of the following:
Gun Safe – Mounting a Protection One sensor on your gun can provide a second layer of protection. It can be set in “report-only” mode. That way, if someone finds the code or key, the system will notify you when your cabinet is accessed.
Liquor and Medicine Cabinets – Worried about teenagers getting into mischief? Place sensors on liquor and medicine cabinets. When you get a signal that the cabinet has been opened, you can view what is happening on your Protection One Security cameras.
Hazardous Materials- Want to go the extra mile in childproofing your home? Install contacts on any cabinet within a child’s reach that might contain harmful or toxic materials. Protection One security systems let you program the sensor in “report-only” mode.
Tool Shed- A sensor can be placed on the door of your tool shed as well. In some situations, it may require special outdoor sensors to deal with extreme temperatures and the elements. Of course, the shed has to be close enough to the Protection 1 hub to get a good signal.
Mailbox- Wondering if the mail has been delivered? Door/window sensors can be placed on the mailbox to let you know
Pool Gate –The best alarm companies have outdoor sensors that can be placed on the pool gate. Check with customer service to find out what sensors are best suited for your situation.
Keep in mind that outdoor applications may require more robust sensors. Mounting on some surfaces can be difficult and the sensors must be within the prescribed distance to the sensor from the main hub.
The best home security system for some people is the company which can provide the most variety of equipment sensors to accomplish specific tasks.

Protection 1 Contracts
Nearly all security providers require a three to five year monitoring contract when you enroll. This is customary in the security industry. Consequently Protection One is no exception to this.. Once the agreement is finalized with Protection 1, the customer always has a 3 day legal right of rescission. Is AI available in Protection 1 Cameras?
Although they still operate under their own name in some markets, they share resources and product line availability with ADT, the largest security provider in the U.S.
Google and ADT have partnered up in an effort to redefine the home security experience. Together, they have developed a program known as “ADT +”.
Essentially it is an “always-on” system …which the user never has to remember to arm or disarm. The always-on system continually monitors the home, both inside and out, and determines if certain events, such as postal delivery, an open door, or the breakage of glass, warrant a notification alert or constitute a potential emergency.
The system uses AI to “learn” which lights to turn on, when doors should be locked, and when the system should be fully armed.
Protection1 System Design - Garage Security
Top 6 Ways to Enhance Garage Security with a Security System
A comprehensive security system shouldn’t end with protecting the home. When investing in a home security system, one should consider protecting the garage as well.
Outdoor Protection 1 Security Camera – Keep an eye on who approaches your garage doors and monitor activity. Most outdoor security cameras offer 1080P HD resolution with motion detection and night vision.
Overhead Door Monitors – Always know whether the largest entry is open or closed. Tilt sensors use an inclinometer to detect the angle of the garage door. They send a signal to the control panel whether the overhead garage door is in an open or closed position.
Garage Door Openers – Allow automation and remote management of the overhead doors. With a wireless connection to the main home security system control panel, the doors can be controlled and even automated from the panel or right through the Protection One App.
Indoor Protection One Security Camera – Monitor activity within the garage when access is gained. In our household, we have shipments and grocery deliveries inside the garage. With an inside camera, we can keep an eye on things remotely.
Exterior Door Contacts – Keep all vulnerable garage doors protected. Exterior and/or home entranceways should be protected.
Heat Detectors – Not affected by smoke and fumes…a heat detector senses rapid rises of temperature due to fire. This is especially important in homes with an attached garage.
So, if the budget allows…updating or installing a home security system that includes garage door security can be well worth the investment!
Tips for Safeguarding Your Security System from Hackers
Keeping your Security System Safe from Hackers
Smart home equipment is now a standard add-on in home security systems. While this makes it extremely convenient to monitor and manage common household appliances, these wi-fi devices can also create weak links that can leave your home network vulnerable to internet hacking.
For this reason, it is more important than ever to follow the best practices outlined below to ensure that your home network is protected from hackers.
Research the Device
When adding 3rd party smart home equipment to your system, do your research to make sure that the manufacturer follows recommended security protocols and best practices. Reputable companies will market equipment that requires password protection, one or two-step authentication, and come with frequent over-the-air firmware and security updates.
Register the Equipment
Smart home devices should be registered right away. This will validate your warranty protection and qualify you for any firmware updates. Typically, these updates will incorporate new features and also address any known security issues. Protection 1 Alarm Systems are capable of over-the-air update.
Pay Attention to Passwords
Be diligent in changing the default passwords. Use different combinations of letters, cases, numbers, and symbols.
Also, it is best to use unique passwords for each smart device. This prevents a hacker from gaining access to all your sensitive accounts if your password for one is compromised.
Create a Secure Wi-Fi Network
To prevent digital intruders from disarming your Protection One Home Security system, the entire home network needs to be secured. The name of the network and default password must always be changed. You should not use your address or any personal details.
Many security-conscious consumers set up a Wi-Fi network specifically for their security system and smart home devices. This makes it harder for hackers to gain access to the rest of your network if there are vulnerabilities in any of the wireless smart devices.
Consider Professional Installation
You may want to opt to have your system professionally installed. Technicians at Protection One should be able to help you incorporate some more advanced security measures.
Reset to Factory Default Settings
Before you dispose of, sell or give away any Protection 1 or 3rd party smart devices, make sure to remove all of your data.

System Design
Designing Your Security System
Perimeter Protection – The first consideration when designing your Protection 1 Home Security system is perimeter protection. The priority at this stage is to deter potential intruders with yard signs, window stickers, and visible Protection One outdoor cameras. Doors should have solid locks. Your security system should include sensors mounted on all doors as well as any vulnerable windows.
Interior Protection – There should be a second line of defense, to detect an intruder if they get past the perimeter protection. Motion detectors can be strategically mounted in high-value areas and/or centralized areas where an intruder might pass. Extra keypads or panic buttons can also be mounted in areas where one might spend extended amounts of time-such as an office or bedroom. Indoor protection One Security cameras can be set up to keep an eye on any part of the home.
Asset Protection- Sensors can also be mounted to monitor other areas of concern such as gun cabinets or office doors to protect valuable items. You may want to consider setting up certain sensors as “non-reporting. This means that, if they are set off, they will only send a signal you through your Protection One App, while not activating the alarm.
Environmental Protection – Your system can also be set up to monitor environmental hazards such as fire, carbon monoxide, flooding, or freezing. Protection 1 has specific sensors for each of these applications.
Home Automation- Protection One Alarm systems can serve as the central hub to control lighting, cameras, heat and air conditioning, doors, and garage door openers. It can be configured to manage virtually any home automation function remotely on the Protection 1 Security App.
Customizing a Protection 1 Security System
Customizing Your Home Security system.
Before deciding on how to best customize your Protection 1 alarm system, make sure that they can provide the equipment you require for a fully customized and cost-effective system. For a truly custom install and to get the most bang for your buck, make sure the system you choose has the versatility and can accommodate the multi-function components described below.
1 The best home security companies offer a full line of “take-over” devices that allow you to upgrade your current security equipment to the most advanced system available. If you are upgrading a system with a fair amount of existing equipment, this is an important consideration.
2 They should have different types of door/window contacts. Top alarm companies offer multiple specialized sensor options for your doors and windows include recessed, plunger, and bypass – providing custom solutions for nearly any installation scenario.
3 It is desirable to have the ability to open and close your garage door with the same keyfob you use for your alarm system. You can also control it with a smartphone thanks to Z-wave products that interface with most garage door brands.
4 Check to see if multi-function sensors are available with your system. This will enable you to protect your home from frozen and broken water pipes and furnace and air conditioning failure with a single sensor.
5 Triple-duty detectors can also activate your alarm system when it senses smoke and high and low temperatures.
Do I need a landline for monitoring?
Protection 1 Reviews – Monitoring Options
A Protection 1 alarm can be monitored with cellular, broadband, or landline service.
Ideally, cellular monitoring is optimal for any security system. This eliminates the possibility of phone or cable wires being cut to prevent an alarm signal from being sent to the monitoring station. Also, cellular or cable connections are required for the Protection 1 Security App.
While some Protection One reviews might take exception to the additional expense of a cellular connection, one can minimize costs by eliminating the landline completely.
Installer Qualifications
Are the Protection 1 Security installers qualified?
Like ADT, they carefully scrutinize their installation technicians. They undergo a rigorous due diligence process that includes:
- State and Federal Background Checks
- DMV Checks
- Employment and Education History
- Subjected to Periodic Drug Testing
- Extensive Initial and Ongoing Training
To provide additional peace of mind, they have also implemented a Tech Tracker program. They will text or e-mail you a picture of the technician and provide an estimated time of arrival before an installation or service call. That way you can confirm their identity prior to allowing access to your home.
Overall, Protection One follows all the industry best practices to ensure customer safety and provide for a quality installation.
Does Protection One still use e-Secure?
Protection One and E-Secure

Do I need a permit to install a Protection 1 Alarm System?
Is it essential to get an alarm permit for Protection 1?
Generally, if your system isn’t professionally monitored, you won’t need a permit. However, if it is monitored remotely and emergency services are used, your local city will likely require a permit. This usually involves a straightforward application and a small fee. You’ll need to provide the security company’s name, address, and phone number, as well as the monitoring station’s if they’re different. Permit fees usually only include a one-time registration fee, though some cities may need annual renewal.
In places with higher crime and false alarm rates, failure to register could lead to emergency services not responding. Even if you do get a permit, though, you may still get fined for false alarms. Most communities will only levy fines after the first or second dispatch. After that, the first offense generally costs between $25 to $50, while subsequent offenses can cost anywhere from $100 to $200.
For the best protection, it’s a good idea to check with your local police department to see if a permit is necessary and to become familiar with the local regulations. This will give you the best chance to avoid false alarms and any associated penalties.
How to avoid False Alarms...
Strategies to help you prevent Protection One false alarms.
As stated earlier, false alarms arising from the use of Protection 1 Alarm systems may be not merely a nuisance, but can contribute to a genuine overload on your local police as well as emergency services resources. Worse yet, you could wind up having to pay steep fines
Although very few Protection 1 Reviews divulge it, the majority of dispatches by monitoring centers across the country are a result of false alarms. Consequently, most towns administer fines to alarm system owners whenever they meet or exceed a particular volume of false alarms.
To prevent this from happening to you, here are some recommendations to avoid a false alarm with your home security system.
Avoiding False Alarms with your Protection One Security System
• You should make sure everybody knows the way to disarm the home security system. Your security alarm is going to have a master passcode, along with a number of supplemental end-user codes that can be programmed into the system. Try to make sure that everyone knows his or her code as well as is able to disarm the security system.
• Be sure that everybody also has learned the security password. If there is an alarm, the central monitoring station will in most cases contact the house for starters and request the security password to confirm that the man or woman answering is an authorized party. In case there is an alarm, should the individual answering the telephone call be unable to produce the exact password, the authorities will likely be dispatched.
• Check to see that every door and window is properly secured before arming the system. Any entrance that’s been left to some degree ajar could be blown open while you are away and set off the alarm.
• Check that that all devices are mounted solidly and in the correct places. Motion sensors need to be affixed at a height of 6’ and away from the fans, heaters, fireplace, and air conditioning systems.
• Give some thought to items which might possibly trigger a motion detector. It’s not only pets ..Air conditioning units can cause fluttering draperies or plants…and helium balloons can be transported about the residence by air currents. Ensure that they tied down in an area far removed from motions.
• Preferably, pets ought to be restricted to zones apart from motion detectors. If that’s not manageable, one can find “pet friendly” or “pet immune” detectors which are able to screen out smaller pets below 40, 50 even 80 lbs. Motion detectors can be set up to provide pet alleys whereby pets could move freely about. The alternative option is to make use of glass break sensors in place of motion sensors.
• It’s essential to replace batteries when required. Just about all alarm systems use Li-Ion batteries which usually have at very least a two-year estimated lifespan. Your Protection 1 Alarm System will in most cases advise you if your batteries have become low- not to mention warn you when there are approximately 30 days of usable life.
It is advisable to obtain extra batteries available and switch them out promptly. Your system will even alert you in case there are other issues with sensors. Any time you receive a system fault notification, run a status check, and troubleshoot the sensor. Get hold of customer service in the event it seems to be not functioning properly.
Keep your customer manuals/codes/passwords in a safe specified location in which they could be checked if required. Although, the ideal way to avoid false alarms is by using your system on a regular basis and make sure that everybody is familiar with the right way to operate the system.

What are some of the other benefits of purchasing Protection 1?
12 added benefits of purchasing Protection One
While think of a home security system as just a burglar alarm system, Protection One Reviews indicate customers are now demanding significantly more all-inclusive security, energy and home management systems. Following are just a few benefits which Protection 1 customers can enjoy when they elect to acquire a Protection One alarm system.
Protection1 defends against Break-ins-Statistics tell us that you are 3 times less inclined to end up being broken into getting a professionally monitored security system. Even the most basic security alarms would typically provide you with numerous layers of security. A yard sign and window decals to deter would-be thieves, perimeter sensors on the doors as well as exposed windows to prevent them from gaining entrance and interior devices including motion sensors and glass break detectors to identify whenever access has been gained.
Activating any one of these alerts is going to activate a local alarm and notify the central station of a security breach when the system is monitored.
Getting full coverage
Protection 1 doesn’t stop with preventing break-ins. By investing in additional equipment, you can obtain comprehensive protection for the whole home.
- Safeguard Against Fire- According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), a fire breaks out pretty much every 24 seconds in America. In 2014 there had been nearly 1.3 million fires documented, resulting in over 13,000 injuries, nearly 3,000 of which were fatal, as well as producing practically 10 billion dollars of property damage. By including Protection One smoke detectors in your monitored home alarm system you can ensure that heat, fire, and smoke are detected at the earliest point in time. Additionally, the fire department will be rapidly alerted – regardless of whether you are home or not. You may not always be there to protect your house, pets and treasured ones…but your Protection One Alarm system assures that that help is en route.

Economic considerations
There are a number of areas in which installing a security system might actually help save you money. While many prospective Protection 1 customers might be concerned with the cost of installing and monitoring a system, let’s take a look at how some of the costs might be offset.
- Reduce Losses In Break In- According to the FBI , in 2012 the typical loss in a domestic burglary was in fact over $2,200. Even though possessing a Security system won’t guarantee that a building won’t be broken into…it seems reasonable to assume that damages might be dramatically reduced in the event that an alarm is blaring away and the burglar know that the authorities had been alerted. Insurance companies appreciate this and that is why…
- Help reduce Insurance Costs- Insurance providers make available substantial discounted rates on Homeowner insurance when the home is protected by a monitored alarm system. Although rate reductions vary from business to business along with the scope of the insurance coverage – average discounts are priced between 5-20% based on the type of security system along with the level of services that are supplied. Make certain that your insurance company is aware of whether or not the system is actually monitored along with whether or not things such as fire, flood and freeze protection is included in your system. Protection One will provide a certificate of installation describing the kinds of services for which your system is monitored.
- Reduce Energy Costs – By setting up a Home Energy Management System, it is possible to lessen fuel as well as energy expenditures drastically. Just by enhancing your light and heating schedules, one can possibly decrease consumption and expenses by as much as $200 annually.
- Improve Resale Valuation – Even though it is not easy to attach a precise value, Protection One Reviews reveal that the majority of future real estate buyers view an alarm system as an appealing feature that could add considerable appeal to the residence. For a number of prospective buyers it is a “must have” and their protection services provides plenty of “bells and whistles” which increase the emotional lure of acquiring a “smart” home.
Affordability – Lots of people are astonished at just how affordable the modern, wireless home security and automation system can be. While it once was that even a standard burglar alarm would undoubtedly run you thousands of dollars, companies such as Protect America, Fromtpoint, and Armorax security help to make comprehensive security and feature-rich home automation systems affordable for almost anybody!
Peace of Mind
You can’t put a value on it…but, the # 1 benefit so many people are searching for when contemplating a home security and automation system is…Peace of Mind. Many people rest better knowing the family is protected …and that they’ve got complete control over the property protection services no matter whether they are home or away.
Questions to consider before getting a home security system
Things to ask yourself before committing to any alarm system
There are several important questions you must determine prior to investing in a system.
Considering the fact that you are most probably committing to a contract for the next 3-5 years, it is advisable to think about various concerns prior to signing the contract.
Do it yourself compared to Expert Installation?
One of the primary concerns is whether or not you intend to set up the system personally or perhaps pay for a professional installation.
Historically, systems had to be hardwired directly into your home. Older security systems involved drilling along with cutting openings in your walls, fishing electrical wires, complex mounting, and extensive programming. It is surprising that there were not more online complaints lodged in Protection 1 reviews when systems had to be hardwired than there are today.
Then again…times have evolved.
In fact, the companies which usually professionally set up the systems, such as Protection One, are now utilizing for the most part wireless equipment.
Online Protection One reviews indicate increased satisfaction with the wireless technology and the Protection 1 app. The number of DIY alarms has increased because technology has become dramatically upgraded over the years to make the equipment particularly intuitive…and easy to set up.
The more experienced Do-it-yourself security alarm service providers have definitely vastly streamlined the setup methods to make it simple for even the most technically challenged homeowners. The better companies pre-program the whole system before sending it out, to ensure that all the end-user needs to do is place the gear and then get in touch with support to have the system activated.
While Protection One reviews occasionally cite some issues with installation or service, over 90% of the customers observed our best DIY security alarm systems straightforward to install!
Potential benefits to DIY Install over professional install
- More Cost-Effective– Setting up your own DIY system can save a substantial amount of money.
- No Contracts – Many security systems will require a 3-year contract. Many DIY security companies, such as Frontpoint are now month-to-month.
- No Waiting– With professionally installed home security, you would have to take time off from work and schedule an appointment. With a DIY security system, once the equipment has arrived, you can get started right away at a time that is convenient for you.
- Increased System Knowledge–Homeowners and renters who install their own systems are more engaged and become more familiar with all the features and operations of their systems.
- Portability– Because the system is wireless, is easy to move. There are no additional moving or associated installation costs. With Protection 1, you may not be able to get service or pay additional charges in some areas.
- No strangers in your home – While most companies take great care in hiring technicians, make sure that your technician has been properly vetted-background checked and drug tested. With a DIY wireless system, YOU are in control!
Potential benefits to Professional Set up
• A reduced amount of time and effort.
• Added Expertise
Though a professionally installed system requires less effort, the great majority learned that the solutions offered by the best DIY security alarm service providers ended up being easy to put in, user-friendly, and saved people a fair amount of cash.
If you should go with a professional installation, always determine how skilled your installer is as well as whether they have been background checked and have also undergone a drug screening process.
Make sure you ask if the company has got its own employees or possibly utilizes 3rd party sub-contractors. Making use of subcontractors really isn’t necessarily bad, (they may also provide more past experiences compared to company employees) nevertheless make sure they should have actually completed thorough screening prior to letting them into your house.
What if I move?
Protection One Security offers a SecureMove program to assist movers in relocating or installing a new system at their new home. They will provide a $150 credit toward activating a new or existing system in the new home. This requires a new 3-year contract.
What if I want to cancel my contract?
They require a minimum 3-year contract. (special promotions sometimes require a 48 month contract) In the event that you need to cancel the contract, they require that you pay 100% of the balance of the contract. For instance, if you had a Smart Control plan and wanted to cancel your standard contract after the first year….the termination fee would be a whopping $1,199.76! This is one of the biggest reasons for negative online reviews.
Is Protection One easy to use?
Consumer-friendly technology has advanced dramatically in the past few years.
One of the many good things about breakthroughs with regard to technologies is that the producers of the equipment used by alarm companies place a massive amount of focus on simplifying the user interface. Almost all home alarm systems incorporate streamlined touchscreen user interfaces that are user-friendly and also guide the user with the aid of capabilities like arming, disarming, bypassing areas, etc..
The Protection One App is the built-in interactive smartphone software utilizing home automation functionality that lets you keep on top of your residence from anywhere around the world utilizing computer access. Many platforms are even integrating voice control capabilities with the aid of their own equipment, Google Home or Alexa. This lets you complete most typical functions by simply issuing voice instructions.
Although you may find reviews that point to difficulties with installs, service as well as billing matters, you’ll rarely ones that complain that the Protection One security system is difficult to manage.
Protection 1 vs ADT
Because of all the potential issues in the ADT/Protection One merger, many home security buyers are just opting to sign up for ADT monitored systems directly. Other prospective buyers are carefully evaluating Protection One Reviews and carefully considering some of today’s other Top Home Security Systems before committing to any home alarm purchase.
Response Time
Emergency Response
How Much Time Will It Take for Protection One to Respond to an Intrusion?
Even though virtually every provider claims to will have the quickest response times in the business, you should know how to decipher these assertions.
Your system will likely ordinarily have a 30-60 second entrance delay with regards to your main entry for you to enable you time to disarm the security system. The Alarm can typically be put on “Instant” function in cases where everybody is home. generally, the siren goes off right after whatever delay if the system is not disarmed.
The Protection One monitoring center response times are generally estimated from the moment a signal is delivered to the moment the dispatcher contacts the home to confirm the signal. These times definitely will ideally be inside a minute. Whenever no person responds at home, the security operator will likely make an effort to contact any individual on the emergency contact list …and then they send the police.
While you may find Protection One reviews that complain regarding higher response times, the majority of the best security alarm suppliers actually do a excellent job – provided all things are working properly.
Protection One Customer Service recommends the actual security system be subjected to testing each week or at least a regular monthly schedule to guarantee that alarms and communications are performing properly.
Nationwide, the average response time frame by the police is about 7 minutes or so, however, this tends to fluctuate substantially depending on the specific location of your residence, the type of the emergency situation, whether there’s audio or possibly video confirmation through the Protection One App and the current demand and even accessibility to local emergency assistance at the time of the call.
Back Up Power
If there is a power outage, does the system continue to perform?
Should the power go out, your Protection 1 system is going to continue to provide you with proper protection by simply switching to battery backup.
The backup battery is rated for 24 hours, however, that could vary in accordance with the size of the home security system, configurations as well as components.
The alarm system will likely beep to alert you that the system is running with backup electrical power and also remind someone to enter your code.
For those customers who have created announcements on the App, you can even receive a notification on your smartphone.
If you are an existing customer who has experienced a power outage, let us know how your system performed in our section for reviews.

Editor's Protection 1 Review Summary
A reputable company offering DIY and professional installation.
Did you find this review helpful? Yes (1) No
I am a longtime Protection 1 customer. I generally have found their customer service staff and technicians to be courteous and helpful. My one complaint is the lack of product information on their website. For example, I am interested in adding two outdoor security cameras. However, I am unable to locate any photographs or specifications for any of their cameras. All that is available are references to cameras, security packages, and phone numbers to call to schedule a visit by a representative, but no actual product information. Very frustrating.
Fred,
Thanks for weighing in. Protection One, like many alarm companies, may offer different makes, models of security cameras based on region and availability. Technology changes quickly in the security industry. Consequently, they keep the website fairly generic. From the consumer’s standpoint, that can be frustrating-especially to those who want to have more specifics and do their own due diligence. Hopefully, you were able to get more specifics by calling in. Best of luck, and feel free to share your experience in our section for Protection One Reviews.
