Is Link Interactive DIY System Easy to Install?

Having been around the security world for a while, I have been on “ride alongs” and watched (and helped…sort of) installers drilling holes and fishing wires. Consequently, I’ve learned lots of creative profanity as seasoned professional technicians expressed their frustrations when things didn’t go smoothly…or they had to wait on hold for what felt like an eternity (45+ minutes or more) waiting to field test communication lines and activate systems…after having to enroll and program each individual sensor.

Thankfully, technology has improved…and Link Interactive takes care of 90% of the process before the system is shipped out.  My test system arrived at my front door pre-programmed and ready to go,  via Fedex,  3 days after the order was placed.

What’s in the Box?

Each of the components was clearly numbered, and was already programmed into the system.  In addition, there was a folder that contained:

  1. List of Components and Zones
  2. Link Interactive Quick Start Installation Guide and One Page “cheat sheet”
  3. Alarm.Com Activation Instruction/Password and User Code
  4. Alarm.Com Quick Start Gide
  5. Comprehensive 2 Gig User Guide
  6. Window Stickers

Everything was clear and concise…with tech support and activation numbers clearly visible.

The system comes with all the components already programmed and “enrolled” in the system.  This is the most time consuming aspect of “installing” a system.  If you were to pay for “professional installation”, the majority of the time the installer is in the home involves enrolling and testing the system and activating and testing the cellular communication module.

All of these things are taken care of by the folks at Link- before it is shipped out.

All that was left for me was to mount the devices…perform a walk test and call in to activate!

Link even prints a QR code right on the box that you can scan with your cell phone and will take you right to a video demo if you are unsure of anything!

Getting Set Up with Link Interactive

In addition to the video mounting instructions, there are  written 2Gig instructions in the box and e-mail, chat and phone support are available as well.  The door sensors are most easily mounted using the enclosed 3M mounting adhesives.  Which are surprisingly secure.  There are also mounting screws available.

The motion detector has both a wall mount and corner mount bracket…and can be configured to screen out pets.

The 2 Gig Go!Control Panel can be either wall mounted or set up on the included desk mount.  It has already been equipped with rhe cellular antenna and the power supply was attached…so it literally just needs to be pligged in to a standard power outlet.

Once all the devices are mounted…one needs to “walk test” the system- to check that all the components are communicating properly.  This is very simple process…as the 2Gig user interface is very intuitive.

  1. Press the “Home Button” on the Control Panel
  2. Enter Security, Menu, Tool Box
  3. Enter Code (Temporary Code is 1111)
  4. Select System Test
  5. Then Open/Close or activate (walk in front of motion sensor)  each of the sensors and listen for voice confirmation

Don’t be shy about contacting customer support…as they are friendly and knowledgeable. I was unsure how to test the glass break sensor and the combination smoke/heat/freeze sensor…and found “Stephanie” pleasant and very helpful.

She instructed me to vigorously jingle my house keys right next to the sensor (Bingo!)…and that I needed to depress the button on the smoke sensor for a full 15 seconds to test all three elements of the smoke/heat/freeze sensor.

Helpful tip:  As this will activate a rather piercing siren, she suggested that I wrap it up in my jacket.  My LL Bean fleece worked admirably…and my eardrums appreciated her advice…

Once I completed the “walk test”….it was just a matter of calling in to activate the system, so that it is monitored.

Perhaps the most exciting innovation in the alarm industry over the past decade has been the development of mobile applications that allow you to monitor and manage your security and home automation system from an internet connection on your desktop computer,  tablet or mobile phone.  Alarm.com provides arguably the best platform on the planet to remotely control and manage your system.

It is compatible with Windows and Windows Phones, Apple IOS, Apple Watch, Pebble, Android and Blackberry….and is very clearly laid out and simple to set up. You can customize Scenes (a series of events…such as turning on light when the system is armed) and set up notifications when events occur…such as arming and disarming the system.

More importantly, it is also easy to use.  The touchscreen has a very intuitive menu and icons that make it easy to navigate. And the Alarm.com  app makes it simple to control and customize the system while on the go.

Why should I choose Link Home Security?

Why should I choose Link Interactive Home Security?

Experienced in the Evolution of Home Security!

One of the unique attributes of Link Interactive is the fact that they are one of the few companies that can offer the best of both worlds-combining the 60+ years of experience in the traditional local, professionally installed, and monitored home security system, with a nationwide offering of the latest, cutting-edge, state of the art wireless equipment for the modern age do it yourselfer.

Let’s face it….the home security and automation market is exploding…and there are new DIY products hitting the market almost daily.  But Link Interactive has evolved with the times and is one of the few companies that has successfully combined the old school, traditional, professionally installed security model with a more current, streamlined business model that appeals to the Do It Yourself market.

So what does that mean to you?

Essentially, with Link Interactive, you are getting your cake and eating it, too. Top-of-the-line equipment…supported by a company with  60+ years of actually installing and servicing that equipment.  Need help?  Would you rather get support from a call center employee reading from a manufacturer-supplied troubleshooting script…or someone trained by service technicians with years of real-world field installation experience?

Custom Capabilities

Because Link Interactive has extensive experience in both wireless and hard-wired installations…they offer a wider array of products to customize home security systems to meet the demands of unique installations that don’t necessarily conform to standard pre-packaged installations.  (In Link Interactive Leads the Way with Innovative Sensors and Solutions we discuss this in greater detail.)

While the trend in DIY home security is to offer basic pre-programmed kits with magnetic sensors that are mounted with industrial 2-sided tape…not everyone is amenable to having transmitters mounted on their custom mahogany entry door.

What if I don’t want transmitters mounted on my doors?Link Interactive Home Security System Review-Entry Door

Unlike many strictly wireless DIY companies, Link Interactive offers custom security solutions for the more ambitious DIY’er. In addition to the standard and mini door/window contacts offered in most wireless security system packages, Link Interactive offers a variety of alternate options to protect entryways.

  • Embedded Contacts- A recessed contact which is embedded into the door frame with a magnet inside the door
  • Plunger Style Door Contacts-A one-piece plunger sensor that is concealed in the door frame

Both of these options are easily installed by the DIY homeowner who is handy with a drill…and a little bit of expert advice from the folks at link Interactive…who have been installing them in the field for years.

System Takeovers

What if I already have an extensive system?

There are many homeowners out there who may have spent thousands of dollars on a professionally installed, custom home security system a few years ago- but want to take advantage of the technological advances in home security and automation systems without breaking the bank…again. (and in many cases, you may even reduce your monthly monitoring costs)

Link Interactive has you covered.  With their TAKE Super Switch, you can convert up to 8 zones per module(and up to 4 additional modules can be accommodated)  and monitor them individually with the 2GIG Go! Control.  And, in addition to the component, you get an hour of tech support as well.

This gives you the best of both worlds…With Link Home Security you can integrate old-world, hard-wired craftsmanship with the latest interactive and home automation features of one of the most technologically advanced systems on the market!

Which Link Interactive control panel should I get?

Link Interactive Security Panels- which should I choose?

While there are pros and cons to both Quolsys and 2Gig, I have been a longtime fan of the 2Gig line-up.  Factory reps can all give you a host of reasons to select their product…and any of them should serve you well.  Often it comes down to personal preference.

Updating Garage Security with Link Interactive

Garage Security by Link Interactive – Does Monitoring the Garage Make Sense?

Garage Door Security

In the world of social media, telecommuting, wireless networks, streaming media, mobile phones…we are bombarded 24/7 with the chirps, buzzes, beeps, ringtones alerting us to status updates for Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, IMs, DMs, VMs, E-mails, Texts, and even old-fashioned phone calls.

Frankly…at times it isn’t difficult to become overloaded or desensitized to the constant barrage of notifications competing for our attention.

Not to mention the fact that there are times when we just can’t pick up the phone. Meetings, Airplanes, Out of service areas…and, even the few hours that we need to hit Do Not Disturb for some well-deserved sleep or downtime. Do you really want to have to be “on-call” 24/7?

Yes…there is a strong case to be made for investing a dollar or two a day to make sure there is a trained professional available 24/7 when it comes to handling a critical emergency involving your home and family.

It is doubtful that many would make that investment for protecting just the garage…but, most of us would agree that, if the budget allows,  spending a few dollars more in one-time equipment upgrades is well worth the investment.

Advantages of Including the Garage in Your Link Home Security System

Advantages of Garage Security With Link Interactive

Quality – First of all, if you are buying components from Link Interactive, you know that they have been tested, tried, and proven in the field.  The best home security providers aren’t going to use shoddy equipment that will result in complaints, service issues, and lost monitoring customers.

Service – If you do have service or support issues, it is best to consolidate those issues with one provider.  It affords you additional leverage and prevents you from having to track down support numbers and deal with multiple providers.

Selection – Link Home Security offers a wide selection of security and home automation equipment that is compatible with their equipment and home automation platforms. You won’t have to worry about getting devices that won’t play well with your other equipment.

Installation – Depending on what company you are working with, it is likely that you won’t be able to get it pre-programmed by your security provider. But, with Link Interactive you will have an experienced support team that can ensure that everything is working the way it should.

Upgrading a Link Alarm System to include Garage Door Security

We recently upgraded our Link Interactive Security test system to include the garage.  In our experience, each of these items came into play.

While we ran into some technical issues regarding our home network, the support team at Link Interactive was outstanding and provided us with the equipment and expertise we needed to get the job done. The ADCV722 Camera synced up easily to the Alarm.com platform.  Sensitivity and range were easily be adjusted to provide the visibility and notifications we were looking for.

While we hoped to utilize the Chamberlain My Q Smart hub shown above, we were unable to…as our ancient, but, still working, garage door openers were not compatible.

We moved on to Plan B – installing tilt sensors.  This was simply a matter of enrolling the sensor to the system and mounting it to the inside of the overhead garage door.

While we can’t control doors, we at least don’t have to brave the cold New England weather to go outside to check if we remembered to shut the garage door at night.

Now we can see the status on either the panel, the Link Interactive App, or at any desktop with internet capability!

….and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

Stay tuned for our full overhead garage door opener side-by-side comparison shoot-out – coming soon!

In the meantime, here are…

Top  6 Ways to Enhance Garage Security with a Link Interactive Home Alarm System

Outdoor Video Camera – Keep an eye on who approaches your garage doors and monitor activity. Most outdoor security cameras offer 1080P HD resolution with motion detection and night vision.

Overhead Door Monitors – Always know whether the largest entry is open or closed. Tilt sensors use an inclinometer to detect the angle of the garage door. They send a signal to the control panel whether the overhead garage door is in an open or closed position.

Garage Door Openers – Allow automation and remote management of the overhead doors. With a wireless connection to the main home security system control panel, the doors can be controlled and even automated from the panel or right through the alarms system App.

Indoor Video Camera – Monitor activity within the garage when access is gained. In our household, we have shipments and grocery deliveries inside the garage.  With an inside camera, we can keep an eye on things remotely.

Exterior Door Contacts – Keep all vulnerable garage doors protected. Exterior and/or home entranceways should be protected.

Heat Detectors – Not affected by smoke and fumes…a heat detector senses rapid rises of temperature due to fire.  This is especially important in homes with an attached garage.

Will a pet set off the motion detector?

Link Interactive motion sensors..

….can be a significant part of your home security system.

When properly positioned motion detectors won’t be set off by pets under 40 pounds.

If you’ve got a larger pet…request upgraded detectors that can screen out pets up to 80 lbs.

You can also inquire about setting up a “pet alley”. Ask a Link technician for specifics.

As an alternative, you can also swap out a motion for a glass break sensor.

Can I get fines for false alarms with Link Interactive Home Security?

Ways to Prevent False Alarms with Link Interactive Security.

While Link Interactive Security will not impose any fines, as previously stated, false alarms resulting from a Link or Costco Security system maybe not just an irritation, but could result in a genuine overload on your community law enforcement as well as emergency services resources. This may result in expensive fees and penalties.

While most Link Interactive Reviews don’t mention it, the majority of dispatches from Link Home Security are a result of false alarms As a result, a large percentage of municipalities impose penalties and fees to homes after they meet or exceed a certain level of false alarms.

To protect yourself from this affecting you, the following are some recommendations to prevent a false alarm with your Link Security or other Costco Home Security system.

• Be sure that everyone is familiar with the way to disarm your Costco alarm system. Your Link Interactive Security system is going to have a master passcode, and in many cases, a number of supplemental operator codes programmed into the system. Attempt to be sure everyone knows his or her code as well as understands how to disarm the Costco Home Security system.

• Make certain that everybody also is aware of the password. In case there is an alarm, the central monitoring station will definitely almost always contact your home for starters and ask for the password to verify that the individual picking up is definitely an authorized party. In the instance of an alarm, should the individual replying to the contact is not able to give Link Interactive Security the appropriate password, the police are likely to be sent.

• Verify that windows and doors are properly secured prior to setting the system. Doors that have been left somewhat ajar could be blown open in your absence and set off the alarm.

• Make certain that all sensors are installed solidly and in the best positions. Motion sensors have to be positioned at a height of 6’ and also clear of fans, heating units, fireplace, and air conditioning units.

• Give some thought to things that would likely set off a motion sensor. It’s not only the pets that generate false alarms. Air conditioners can cause fluttering drapes or plants…and don’t forget about helium balloons that could be carried about the residence by way of air currents. Confirm they are tied down far from motions. Having a Link Home security system equipped with Costco security cameras would enable you to check in to make sure that the alarm is genuine.

• In a perfect world, pets ought to be limited to locations away from the motion sensors. In cases where this is simply not viable, there are certainly “pet-friendly” or “pet immune” detectors that commonly screen out smaller-sized pets under 40, 50 even 80 lbs. Motion sensors can also be set up to generate pet alleys where pets can move freely about. A different choice is to utilize glass break detectors as a substitute for motion detectors.

• Make sure to swap batteries when needed. Virtually all security systems utilize Li-Ion batteries which probably have at very least a 2-year likely lifespan. Your Link Security App by Alarm.com will generally inform you in the event the batteries have become low along with warning you when there is around a month of usable life.

It is a good idea to have additional batteries around and replace them right away. Your system may also alert you should there be any other problems with sensors. In the event that you receive a system fault alert, conduct a status check and examine the sensor. Contact Mountain Alarm if it looks like any sensors in your Link Security system appear to be malfunctioning.

Store user Link Security manuals/codes/passwords in a very safe selected place where they can be consulted if required. Although, the right way to avert false alarms is by using your Costco Home Security system frequently and ensure everyone knows the right way to operate your Link Alarm System.

Link Interactive Reviews - Top 5 Features of the ADC-V722W Outdoor Wireless Security Camera

Customizing your Link Interactive Security Camera

There are lots of 1080P HD outdoor wireless cameras out there. Link Interactive uses primarily ADC cameras which are designed to offer solid value and perform flawlessly within an Alarm.com integrated system.  It allows you to utilize comprehensive video analytics to fine-tune sensitivity, coverage area, and notifications so that you can customize the video notifications to your needs.

The Alarm.com powered Link Interactive App is intuitive and user-friendly…so that with a bit of trial and error, even a novice can control and manage the cameras. The App provides tutorials and walks you step by step through the process.

Why is this important?

Well, the ADC cameras offered through Link Security are set up by default to record short video clips whenever it detects motion within its field of vision. It stores up to 3000 of those clips in a standard account for 30 days.  The camera may generate a clip every time a car drives by, a bird flies by or the neighbor’s dog runs through the yard. Check out the frequency of the clips before setting parameters.

ADC Cam Capture- No Parameters

As you can see in the “Highlight” bar running along the bottom, the camera was set off each time a car drove by…6 times in a 45-minute span. (Note how the software uses AI to identify each of the major subjects in the image)

The Alarm.com  App allows you to set up parameters so that you can control the sensitivity of the motion sensor….

The following is an example of how easy it was to set up Alarm.com cameras on our Link Interactive test system.

ADC Video Analytics - Motion Sensor Control

…as well as the area in which that motion will generate a video clip. In this case, we screened out the street using the “Ground Zone” feature, so that passing vehicles and neighbors walking their dogs would not generate a video clip.

Alarm.com Camera Video Analytics - Ground Zone

Additionally, we took advantage of the system’s artificial intelligence ability to recognize the difference between objects and set up e-mail notifications when the system recognizes a human in the selected field of vision. This is a great way to know when the mail has arrived!

ADC Video Analytics- Notification

As a result of the changes made, the ADC-V722W camera no longer generates a video clip whenever a car goes down the street, and I now get notifications only when a human being enters the selected field of vision. And the real beauty of it was that it was a simple and intuitive process!
