Who is Alder Home Security?
Alder Security is a home security systems marketing company that operates in various regions around the country. They have a highly compensated, commission-based legion of door-to-door sales representatives. Founded in 2008, they have grown dramatically with this aggressive sales strategy…but, the Alder Security BBB rating has dropped to a rather dismal B- rating as a result.
Government Action and Response to Excessive Alder Security Complaints for Deceptive Sales Tactics
They were recently sued successfully by ADT for deceptive sales practices and unfair competition. Hundreds of ADT customers were misled by Alder sales representatives posing as ADT reps “upgrading” existing ADT systems. They were actually switching ADT customers over to long-term Alder contracts. Alder Security Complaints Show They Violated FCRA
As reported in SSI…
“On Dec. 11, 2020, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Arkansas Attorney General settled with Alder Holdings, resolving allegations that Alder failed to provide proper notices under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
The Utah-based home security company had to pay a $600,000 civil money penalty for not giving consumers notice when it provided less favorable credit terms based on a review of their credit reports —also known as risk-based pricing.
The complaint alleged that Alder, in extending credit to its customers for its home alarm products and services, charged customers who had lower credit scores higher activation fees, but failed to provide those customers with the required risk-based pricing notice, according to a release from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Alder is also currently involved in related litigation with the State of Arkansas in Arkansas state court. Under the terms of the settlement, if Alder agrees to pay $100,000 to settle the related state-court litigation, that amount will be offset from the $600,000 civil penalty in the risk-based pricing case.”
Is Alder Security Legit? Technically, YES but…Caveat Emptor
If they have come knocking on your door…we highly recommend that you get all the details in writing, exercise caution and do your due diligence before making a decision and signing on the dotted line.
While they are not a scam, online Alder Security reviews cite many instances of misrepresentation and deceptive sales practices. This is not uncommon in door-to-door marketing companies where it is difficult to monitor unscrupulous or perhaps just overzealous sales personnel.

I am disappointed with Alder as a company because their sales rep/ agent are sourcing new customers thru a lie and they should disclose all relevant info to customers and stop the lie of convincing us that there is no contract/agreement. I was clearly told by the agent there was no agreement when enrolling for the service.
Anyways kudos to Roy for understanding his job and treating me with respect. If it was not for him, this would be the last you would be hearing from me and hope that Alder can do better in the future if any.
Update: I am still waiting for someone to contact me about sending a technician. I get emails telling me that I will receive a phone call to set up a time for that technician, but after a week I have given up on that. I have received emails in answer to inquiries I have made promising a resolution to the problem, but at this point do not believe that a resolution is imminent. System was good while it worked, but after less than a year it no longer does.

Alder Security Review – 2024 Alder Alarm System Summary
Reputation and Credibility
Alder Security is a Utah-based home security company that has been around for over 10 years.
their home security systems are DIY and available in all 50 states. Professional installation is available in most areas at an additional cost.
In many areas, teams of seasonal commissioned “door knockers” and installers are deployed to penetrate a market.
This aggressive sales strategy can result in a slew of potential service issues and customer frustration. It likely contributes to Alder’s history of a somewhat lackluster B- BBB rating which has been downgraded to a C BBB rating in 2021. The BBB report list 1,366 complaints closed in the last 3 years and 541 complaints closed in last 12 months
The Alder website is extremely vague and provides little information. Other than some generic security statistics and a general overview of typical equipment, it offers almost no specifics on personnel screening practices, monitoring center credentials, warranties, guarantees and provides absolutely NO transparency for equipment or monitoring rates.
Consequently, it is nearly impossible for consumers to research and compare without calling in or setting up an in-home consultation with sales personnel. Additionally, prospective customers must rely on verbal assurances from part-time reps regarding policies instead of published information.
Alder reps are equipped with tablets and require only an electronic signature…making it sometimes difficult for a potential customer to adequately review the terms and conditions of the contract that they are signing. Promotions and incentives often serve as inducements for 60 month contracts…so be sure that you understand the terms of the contract.
Aside from some very basic information about their systems and available monitoring features….details about virtually any aspect of the company are nowhere to be found on the website. This does little to inspire confidence…
Alder Alarm Monitoring
Alder Home Security does offer 24/7 professional monitoring and claims to offer fast response times, they fail to disclose what company is actually monitoring the accounts or what their credentials are.
Ideally, one should be looking for fully redundant UL-Listed, Five Diamond CSAA Certified monitoring centers.
Unlike most security companies, Alder Security may require a 5-year monitoring contract for some promotions and/or services. In addition, there are many negative online Alder Security reviews with complaints of Auto-Renewal clauses.
Their rates start at $34.95/mo. and increase based on the required services that include:

Alder Security App
The Alder Security App provides the platform for interactive features and home surveillance. This app gives you control over the security system and home automation functions remotely and allows you to receive event notifications and observe video on your iOS, Android, and Windows devices…as well as through a standard web browser.
The Alder APP received a 2.8 rating on the APP Store and a 3.8 rating on Google Play in 2020. The ratings for their Apps slipped down to the current ratings of:

- Google Play = 3.1
This slide in ratings may have been a result of issues with integrating the Kami and Yi camera offerings. Previously, these were only managed through their individual apps.
Alder Alarm Monitoring Prices
Alder Security monitoring packages are not published and require a call from a sales rep or an in-home consultation for specifics.
Monthly rates are estimated at $34.99 and up based on the equipment and services.
Alder Alarm System Equipment Pricing
Alder Security does not list equipment pricing on the website, making it difficult for consumers to compare equipment pricing. They do provide a touchscreen system-but it is not clear whether this is their standard offering or an upgrade.
Pricing information is provided during a sales call or an in-home consultation. Aside from the fact that this requires the prospective customer to take an hour and a half out of the day….it can result in potentially high-pressure sales tactics often used by temporary seasonal commissioned sales personnel.
Alder claims minimal upfront costs.
Add-on equipment costs may be rolled into the monthly cost and/or extend the length of the contract.
Alder Customer Service
Online feedback is mixed at best…with over 1300 BBB complaints filed over the last 3 years.
Complaints range from misrepresentation, service issues, taking advantage of the elderly, failure to inform customers of the 5-year contract term, or the automatic annual renewal clause.
There is no 6 Month service guarantee (certain restrictions apply) such as offered with an ADT Monitored Security System.…or 14 day trial period such as that offered by Frontpoint Security.
Alder Security does not publish the terms of the contract, warranty provisions, or guarantee details.
Online Alder reviews frequently claim excessive hold times, well in excess of 15 minutes, when it comes to customer service and billing issues.
Alder Security Review Summary – Not a scam…but, Buyer Beware
The Alder Security sales representative that comes knocking on the door will likely tell you that your home has been chosen for a free system to increase visibility in your neighborhood and serve as a way to advertise their name. S/he may seem very sincere when explaining that this is a limited-time opportunity…available to only a select few.
In reality, these are outdated, manipulative sales techniques are nothing more than a ploy to create a sense of urgency and dupe trusting individuals into making a snap decision before they can do their due diligence.
Or…some even less scrupulous individuals have been known to claim that they represent your existing alarm company and are there to “update” your equipment. Unwary, trusting individuals have “signed for the equipment” on a tablet, unwittingly signing a contract for 3-5 years of service.
That is why all “in-home” sales are protected by a 3 day right of rescission. Don’t be afraid to exercise that right if you feel you have acted hastily. (they are trained to close the sale and employ any number of tactics)
Keep in mind…while it is certainly important to be concerned with home safety, Alder Security may require up to a 60 Month contract.
After the 3-day “cooling off period”, if you want to cancel the Alder Home Security contract, it will involve a substantial cancellation fee.
And aside from their shady sales practices, the fact that the website is so vague and lacks transparency is another red flag.
While they do offer a free in-home consultation with an Alder Security salesperson, many consumers may be uncomfortable about having to schedule an appointment with sales personnel.
If you don’t want a high-pressure in-home sales pitch or a 60-month contract …and prefer more transparency, you may be better served by investigating alternatives offered by our Top Alarm Companies.

If an Alder security salesman has come knocking on your door, you definitely want to do your due diligence before signing anything.
Alder security was founded in 2008. They employ a legion of door-to-door summer sales teams to peddle their systems across populated areas around the country. They have a dismal B-minus Better Business Bureau rating and online Alder security reviews indicate the many issues with sales misrepresentation, contract length. auto-renewals, service, and poor customer service.
They were recently successfully sued by ADT for deceptive sales practices and have been involved in two recent government action suits.
One of the most common complaints is that Alder home protection sometimes requires a 60-month monitoring contract with automatic contract renewals for their monitoring services.
Their monitoring rates start at $35 a month with higher prices based on the services provided and require a three-to-five-year contract.
When it comes to Alder equipment and monitoring pricing there’s virtually no online transparency. You’ll have to speak to an alder salesman or schedule an in-home appointment to get pricing.
To summarize… no matter what the Alder Home door-to-door rep tells you, they’re trying to lock you into a three-to-five-year contract. There are scores of online customer complaints about poor service misrepresentation lengthy contracts billing and Auto-renewal clauses.
Before signing on the dotted line with Alder Home protection, make sure that you examine the contract closely and get everything in writing. Don’t let yourself be pressured into the sale before comparing with one or two of our top-rated companies.

Alder Home Security – Common Sensors and Components
Alder alarm systems can accommodate a comprehensive selection of components. This will enable you to customize your systems to fit your needs and budget.
The great thing is that most systems are fully expandable. You can start with a basic Alder Security system and build upon it when your needs change and/or your budget allows.
Following is a list of the major common components. We have included the more basic sensors that are often included in a starter wireless home security package, as well as a variety of sensors that you might want to add to a more comprehensive customized system.
The Basic Wireless Home Security Package
The Control Panel Hub
While some systems come with a separate base unit and keypad, the majority will integrate the two. You still find very basic units with pushbutton controls, but most will offer a touchscreen display. Even the basic Alder Security system package contains a pushbutton keypad, but additional touchscreen panels are available.
Touchscreen Panel – Most top wireless systems come with some form of touchscreen panel where you can arm and disarm your system and manage any connected devices. The panels can be mounted on the wall or set up with a desktop display mount. Many will have an internal cellular antenna that can function as a primary or backup means of communication.
Cellular Communicator – Sometimes the cellular communicator may be a device all on its own. It can be used, in some cases, to keep connected to the app as well as the monitoring center. The advantage of a cellular connection is that it stays on in a power outage and can’t be cut, unlike regular phone lines and cable.
Window/Door Sensors – Otherwise known as contact or entry sensors. Each sensor is two parts, one that goes on the door or window frame, and one that goes on the door or window itself. One is a magnet and one is a transmitter. When the magnetic field between the two is broken, a signal is sent to the main unit. It is usually recommended to place sensors on all doors and the most vulnerable windows on the main floor.
Motion Sensors- Motion sensors detect movement inside the house. They typically screen out smaller objects (below 40 lbs.) and can be placed in larger common areas in the home where an intruder might pass.
Glass Break Sensors- Glass break sensors, as the name implies, can detect the sounds of glass breaking, as intruders will often break windows to gain entry. They are not typically included in basic packages, but can sometimes be swapped out and often used instead of motion detectors when there are larger pets in the home.
Keypad- Keypads are used to enter passcodes to arm and disarm your system. In many systems, they are integrated into the main hub. They should be placed on the wall or near where you most commonly enter and exit your home. Secondary optional wireless keypads can be placed in master bedrooms or other areas where one might want to arm or disarm the system
Panic button- Panic buttons are often included on the main keypad. They can immediately alert the monitoring station of an occupied medical, fire, or personal threat or emergency. There are also separate wireless buttons or pendants available which can be activated anywhere with range of the base unit
Key Fob- Often referred to as keychain remotes, key fobs work with most wireless security systems so that you can arm and disarm them even away from the keypad. Some key fobs can also include a panic alert feature.
Yard Sign- Yard signs can serve as a deterrent. They alert anyone that the home is protected by an Alder home alarm system. While some people argue that this will ward off would-be intruders, others argue that they may provide insights as to the age and make of the systems to a savvy criminal. Realistically, they are more likely going to move on to easier targets.
Window Stickers- The same arguments arise when it comes to window stickers. Some experts suggest that it might make sense to use signs and stickers from a different company if you are concerned.
Siren- The majority of security system touch screen panels or base stations have sirens built-in. We recommend sirens of at least 85 decibels. Auxiliary sirens are typically available for larger homes or systems which don’t have built-in sirens
Environmental Sensors
Top wireless alarm companies provide equipment that will allow you to monitor a variety of potential threats within your home. Typically, each of the components below can be integrated seamlessly into the system and monitored right through the system’s app.
Smoke Detector- In the event of a fire, a wireless smoke detector will automatically send a signal to the central monitoring station if no one is home or if they are unable to get to the phone. Many of them also incorporate a rate-of-rise heat sensor which can detect rapid increases in temperature. This is helpful in extreme temperatures if cooling systems fail, or if there is a flash fire that doesn’t have a lot of smoldering smoke.
CO Sensor – Carbon monoxide is a tasteless, colorless, and odorless gas that can be lethal if ingested in large quantities. Wireless alarm systems equipped with monitored CO detectors will alert you of dangerous levels of CO even when you’re not home.
Smoke/CO Firefighter Module- Already have standard smoke and CO in the home? Some wireless home security systems are compatible with smoke and CO alarm modules that can detect the sounds of your existing smoke and CO alarms going off and alert you via your mobile app.
Flood Sensor- You may be able to prevent major flood damage if you can catch leaks as soon as they happen. Flood sensors, sometimes called water leak detectors, can be placed near the dishwasher, washing machine, sump pump, or any other areas where floods can occur.
Heat Detector- While temperature sensors may be built into smoke alarms, they can be sold as separate devices that alert you of rapidly rising temperatures in your home, which could indicate fires. It is often a good idea to use these in a garage or near the furnace, where emissions tend to set off smoke detectors.
Low-Temperature Sensors- Low Temp Sensors can be set to monitor if the temperature dips below 45 degrees to prevent frozen pipes. These can be placed on exterior walls where the plumbing runs and in the coolest areas in the home that might be vulnerable to sub-freezing temperatures.
Alder Security Cameras, Appliance Modules, and Smart Locks
Indoor/Outdoor Cameras- Wireless Alder security cameras allow you to monitor and record what is happening in and outside of your home. Most wireless alarm systems offer a variety of camera options for both indoor or outdoor use. The current standard is 1080P HD resolution which is motion-activated and offers night vision. Cameras are also available with two-way voice capability and some even offer Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can distinguish between persons and objects such as pets.
Micro-SD card- While most cameras offer cloud storage of video clips, (at a price) some cameras come with storage capabilities on micro-SD cards. These are typically purchased separately, gaining up to 64 GB of local storage.
Video Doorbells- Video doorbells integrate a doorbell and a camera into one component. They may operate through the existing doorbell wiring or function as a stand-alone unit with a rechargeable battery. Many of the better systems are motion activated and include 2-way voice to allow you to speak with your guest through the system. If it is incorporated into your wireless alarm system it can be operated from your control panel or directly through your system’s app. These are a popular add-on to enable wireless security system owners to monitor packages dropped off at the front door…esp. during the holiday season.
Appliance and Light Modules- These are separate modules that plug into the existing 110v outlets that enable you to control lighting and small appliances right through your wireless home security system. You can turn lights on and off, start the coffee in the AM, raise the shades and turn on fans right through your app. The best wireless security systems even let you set up rules or scenes which will let you automate a whole series of events when you issue a single command.
Smart Locks- Never worry about placing a spare key under the doormat again. Smart locks can be locked and unlocked remotely. Alder security is the worst. I tried to cancel the contract because I am on Disability and they did not care. When we got Alder my husband worked. Now we are on a fixed income and we can not afford it. They don’t care. So we have to pay $44.99 a month instead of getting our medicine’s and eating. And they told us if we wanted out of the contract it would cost over $1,000.00. So if you are thinking of getting Alder Security, DON’T it is the worst. They are ALL about money an not the customer.
They never told us that there was a time limit on how long we had until we could do a return. So I tried sending the stuff back they did not want it they just wanted our money and now they change their name to keep drafting money out of our account. I had to pay 115.00 for it to be stopped
And they still found a way into my account. They said we would have to pay 3000.00 for the system we don’t want. So they are going to have another law suit very soon.

I have had Alder for 3 years, in Dec 2021 their phone carrier updated to 5g in our area which caused our system to stop communicating with the Alder base. We were gone from Nov 2021 until May of 2022 and never received any notices of problems. We assumed everything was operating but to our surprise when we returned the end of May 2022 we learned that there was no communication between our panel and the Alder base. While there was no problem at the house, had there been there would have been no notices. We asked for compensation for the 6 months of no service and was either totally ignored or offered minor compensation if we renewed our contract for 60 months. I declined and elected to end the contract which was over the 3 years. I was told that they automatically renew the contract if they are not notified before the end date of the contract. They now refuse to end the new 1 year contract that I never consented to and want another $494 to end the contract. Beware of any Alder sales offers as you will be stuck with a company that is only interested in profits and not the customer
The input panel quit working and the passcode cannot be entered to disarm the or do anything to stop an alarm. I called and the circus began. An Alder Security tech is supposed to come out over a month from now and that now leaves my Alder Home security system useless. I am going to put a stop payment on my bank and force a contract termination.
The same exact problem is happening to me. I keep getting the same response when I call. It has to be approved it could take up to 3 weeks. It’s been 3 months since they took my money. I have not received a refund yet. I just sent another email today.
Alder Security is most unprofessional company I ever experienced. Their product is worthless We became prisoners in our own house. When we go out of town with get calls it’s going off. We talked to them on many occasions and they sent no one out. They told me that it may be a fee to come out. This is ridiculous to charge a customer that is have trouble with faulty equipment. Even the fire department was fed up with coming to my house for false alarms. They claim it was going off because we were cooking which was not the case. And the fire department checked for carbon monoxide leaks- none was detected. I ask to get out of the contract. Instead they offered to send me another smoke detector. At this point I don’t want that that messed up equipment in my house. Now they asking for over a 1000 dollars to relieve my out of the contract. This is not good business. Alder Home Security needs to be shut down. Every customer in my town that I talked to has similar or the same exact problems. This company should not be in business. Very unprofessional to my opinion!!!! Thanks

I’m giving Alder $53 of my hard earned money for the worst service I’ve ever had from any company. Will be so glad when this contract ends. Door bell worked once. I called and was told that I’d have to fix it. Panel is always going off. Not a happy customer!
DO NOT utilize Alder home security system. I have had nothing but problems with our system and customer service. We currently have no sensors and therefore no service, but are stuck in a three year contract with them. So, we pay around $50 a month for nothing. We are just waiting for the 3 years to be up to cancel.

Please let me save you some headaches!!! This company will not let you out of you contract when the 5 years are up. The came to fix one of many problems with my system and had me sign a tablet stating that was to confirm the work was done. Come to find out they used that signature as a renewal after I had already told them on the phone that I would never renew this contact. They never called police when the alarm went off or when I gave them the wrong security code. It is so bad I unplugged my entire system over a year ago. This equipment has issues every 2 or 3 months and it is almost impossible to ger someone to come out. Faulty equipment and bad security. You will NOT get what you pay for. If you have Alder, my advice is to never ever, erver sign anything else or you will never get out of the contract for under $2,00.00
We have had Alder for a few years now, only b/c they refuse to let us out of contract. Two of our cameras stopped working and they did not want to replace them all. They would not send a tech out to install them either. Also, when we did have to remove the door bell camera it took months to get the replacement and I had to install it. The monitor goes off all the time for glass breaks and there is none. They want us to use three different apps to monitor b/c of the cameras. I was even on the phone to them once and I told them my husband was sleeping and I would not call him to ask a question, so they put me on hold and somehow called him from my number (or what appeared to be my number) and he was in a panic b/c he was sleeping and I never call when he tells me he has to sleep b/c he works crazy house. They lie and have very poor customer service. The sales person promised all kinds of things and we had issues from the start but he never would call back. We should have NEVER used them.
When she came to my door to sale me Alder she said right off that I can stop any month and just give back the equipment that was a lie by her I have dementia I think she’s was playing on my health issues they have no morals!!!
I have been an Alder customer for over 5 years. My recent complaint has been my control panel keep going off for no reason. I have called over and over getting people who has me taking the panel down off the wall hitting a reset button. I have reset this panel everyday and it has not stop my panel for going off. It has to be something wrong but they refuse to send someone out are replace the panel. So I have been recording my conversations for this purpose sleep deprivation even when we unplug the console it continues to beep. A next step is needed I have tried to work with them no I am tired!!!

5year contract is like a bad marriage
My home security panel and sensors have clearly gone bad (really faulty for 2 months) including false alarms, the panel being blank when trying to input my alarm codes, and also the alarm NOT REGISTERING that anyone has entered my home (that someone being me! The alarm stays engaged after entering my home… thats NOT secure. NOT SAFE!! How is this my protection when they make up excuses instead of fulfilling their part of the agreement I pay the bills they don’t have to give me equipment that works? When

Originally signing up they clearly stated that if I have any problems in the future with my equipment “just give them a call” and they will replace the FAULTY EQUIPMENT. Needless to say its not that easy. I have made multiple calls and they won’t give me equipment. It’s like a bad marriage, I’m stuck for 5 YEARS! The cameras dont work, the smoke detectors doesn’t work, and now the panel doesn’t work. It’s not just giving false signals, but not picking up when I walk in the door and othertimes blanking out not letting me input my info in so it will stop screaming at me. This is ridiculous. Another day sitting on the phone while I should be at work with NO RESOLUTION AGAIN. I want my money back, released from this contract, or simply little to no hassle to get my faulty equipment replaced with good equipment without all these outright EXCUSES! Come on Alder.

I returned the equipment without unpacking as I decided not to use their service. They told me my refund would be processed within 5-7 business days. A month later I called asking about my refund and was told it would take 60-90 days for the refund from the date they received the equipment. I waited the 90 days without getting my refund. WHen I called today was as told it had been processed about 5 weeks ago and the check was mailed. Was transferred to another person who told me it was approved 5 weeks ago, the refund would be 60-90 days from that date ! Plus they billed me a month of service to top it off. Horrible customer service. Plus they “have to” mail a check. Not able to refund back to credit card.
