Blink vs Ring Doorbell Review – Which is Right for You?

When it comes to doorbell cameras, there is no shortage of options from which one can choose. However, the playing field is dramatically smaller if one is seeking a name brand, quality unit for under $50.

We briefly compared  Blink video doorbell camera with the Ring doorbell camera in our Ring vs Blink comparison review…and in this Blink vs Ring doorbell camera review, we will dive deeper into the Ring vs Blink doorbell camera debate so that we can help you select the one that best suits your needs.

The Ring Doorbell Camera vs The Blink Video Doorbell Camera

Which Doorbell Camera right for you?

Blink is one of the most popular budget wireless Wi-Fi security cameras on the market.  Owned by Amazon, we think the Blink doorbell camera offers a lot of value for less than $50.  That’s less than half the typical price of the most basic wireless Ring doorbell cam.

But, what kind of performance does it really deliver at that price point? This comparison will focus mostly on comparing the more basic wireless Ring doorbell video camera with the Blink doorbell cam…but, Ring also offers a number of more sophisticated options at higher price points.

Which is right for you? Well…you be the judge.

This Blink vs Ring doorbell camera review will lay it all out and let you decide.

Pressed for time? Our quick jump table of contents to the left will take you to the sections that spark your interest.

Blink vs Ring Doorbell Cameras Overview

Ring was the first company to bring video doorbells to the market with their DoorBot launch a decade ago. They have only continued to evolve since then. Now known as Ring, they have expanded their product line to include a wide range of indoor and outdoor cameras, as well as home security and automation tools.

When it comes to the video doorbell market, Ring is the clear winner when it comes to name recognition. But that doesn’t mean Blink can’t hold its own. The Blink Video Doorbell Camera offers 1080p HD video, motion detection, 2-way audio, and night vision…and has been offered as low as $34.99. That is nearly a third of the entry-level Ring doorbell cam.

Both Ring and Blink are compatible with Alexa and offer a free trial of their cloud storage for video clips. Blink also has the added bonus of local storage. The standard Ring Video Doorbell is more expensive at $99.99, but it offers a wider field of vision and better motion detection. If you’re looking for more, Ring has a full line of doorbells with advanced features.

  • Dual Wi-Fi Band Connectivity
  • Interchangeable Face Plates
  • Hot-Swappable Removeable Battery Packs
  • Power over Ethernet Connection
  • Professional Installation

With Ring’s wireless doorbell prices ranging from $99 to  $349, there is something to fit every budget of the more discerning consumer looking for next-generation technology.

Additional models and options can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Ring vs Blink Video Doorbell Camera…Wants vs Needs?

When it comes down to making a choice between Ring and Blink doorbell cameras, it might be a matter of economics.  If budget is the primary concern, then the Blink Video Doorbell camera is a clear winner. However, when comparing Ring vs Blink doorbell camera features- Ring holds the edge. It is up to you to decide whether or not you can justify spending additional dollars to gain the benefits that the additional features will set you back.

Ring vs Blink Video Doorbell ImageIn our situation, (get details in our Blink Video Doorbell Review) the field of vision of the Blink Doorbell camera was more than adequate.  The resolution would be the same, regardless of whether we used the Ring Doorbell Cam or Blink. And, the distance from the road and the frequency of visitors we have at the front door, means that any advanced artificial intelligence features would have little value.

Because we were not going to be using the existing doorbell wiring, the Blink camera battery life was a primary consideration…and the Blink wireless cameras claim a far superior battery life.  That certainly tipped the scales in their favor…so in this scenario, it was an easy choice to select the Blink doorbell vs Ring.

However, your situation might be very different. There are many factors that come into play when deciding whether Blink or Ring best suits your needs.

Ring vs Blink Doorbell Cam Installation

One of the advantages of the Blink Doorbell Camera offered,  at the time of this review, was the fact that the Blink Doorbell Cam could be installed wirelessly, whereas the entry- level Ring camera required hard-wiring to existing doorbell wiring.  This was a major consideration for us…as our older home doorbell wiring was not compatible.

Blink vs Ring Doorbell Camera Similarities

Blink vs Ring Doorbell Camera Review - Similarities

DIY Install

Both Ring and Blink Doorbell Cams are simple to install.

No need for drilling or wiring with wireless doorbell cameras – the instructions are clear and simple. Even those who aren’t tech-savvy can easily install the system, as each company provides helpful videos to walk you through the process. It’s a great way to save money and avoid having to hire a professional. Installation is made easy – a breeze, even – with the straightforward steps provided. So why not take advantage of this effortless way to set up your own system?

Affordable

Because there is no expensive professional installation required, both companies are able to provide effective and affordable video monitoring solutions for the average household.  The equipment costs are reasonable and there are no expensive or long-term contracts required. Both Blink and Ring doorbell cameras  offer reasonably priced cloud-based storage.

Video Quality

The days of grainy grey-scale video in 480p or 720p are gone.  Both Ring and Blink offer doorbell cameras that view and record in 1080p HD to provide crisp full-color footage.

Two-Way Talk

Want to be able to communicate with the person (or pet) on the other side of the lens?  Both companies have you covered by offering two-way talk capabilities on their devices.

Alexa Compatibility

As both companies are owned by Amazon, it comes as no great surprise that they are Alexa-compatible.  This means that you can easily connect, view and manage your devices using voice commands on your mobile phone and any other Alexa-supported device such as the Echo Show, Fire TV, and Fire Tablets.

Night Vision

Cameras are all equipped with night vision so that you can get at least a limited range of view in darkness.  For superior night vision outside of the home, both companies now have an outdoor floodlight camera solution as well.

Motion-Activated

Their home security doorbel cameras are equipped with built-in motion sensors. They are set up to automatically begin recording when the motion sensors detect motion. This saves storage space, as the camera records only the activity that matters, not continually day and night.

Remote Connectivity

Both companies offer mobile apps so that the cameras can be viewed and managed remotely.

Cloud Storage

Both Ring and Blink Doorbell video cameras offer identical, no-contract cloud storage programs so that you can store and review video clips.  Both are reasonably priced at $3/month per camera or $10 for Unlimited.  Annual discounts are available, as well.

In addition, the Blink doorbell camera offers a local storage solution….which brings us to our next section.

Key Differences Between the Blink vs Ring Doorbell Cameras

Ring vs Blink Doorbell Cameras - Key Differences

Equipment Selection

While both Blink and Ring started out with fairly limited product offerings, Ring has expanded its equipment portfolio more aggressively. They now offer a variety of video doorbell options with advanced feature sets that include artificial intelligence and other technological enhancements.

Although Blink has expanded their offerings as well….they have adopted a bit more limited focus geared to more cost-effective video products.

Technology

While both companies provide quality equipment, Ring has a significant edge when it comes to incorporating more advanced technology.

The Ring Advanced Motion Detection does a better job of screening out false positives and the Ring Video Doorbell yields a greater field of vision. All of these things come at a price, however. This leads us to…

Value

The concept of ‘value’ is subjective, depending on how you decide to define it. When considering the most cost-effective route to quality equipment with basic functions, Blink seems to be the most logical choice. But if you want the additional advantages that come with more advanced technology, Ring may be the more worthwhile option.

As of this writing, the Blink Doorbell Camera can be found as low as $34.99, whereas the Gen2 Wireless Ring Doorbell Cam will set you back $99.99.

Local Storage Capability – How to Eliminate Blink Subscription Costs

Blink Sync Module 2 DataB

Blink Sync Module 2 w/ attached Flash Drive

One major difference that provides a clear distinction between the two, is that Blink Doorbell Video Camera offers the user a choice of either Cloud storage (the pricing is identical to Ring) or local storage. You can get basic video clip storage without incurring any Blink subscription costs.

Thankfully, for a bit extra (currently $35 retail…but, included as a bundle in select packages), one can avoid the monthly recurring charge (between $3-$10/mo.)  Cloud storage charge.

The Sync Module 2 can hold up to 256GB of storage (flash drives sold separately) and will support up to 10 Blink cameras.

Professional Monitoring

Another major distinction between the two is that Ring provides an ecosystem in which one can seamlessly integrate the video camera system into a full-fledged, professionally monitored intrusion and home automation system.  The Ring Protect Pro package is available for only $20/mo. and includes Cloud storage.

Blink does not offer that option.  It is, however, a great alternative to save some serious coin on the video component when coupled with one of our best home security companies.

Ring vs Blink Doorbell Camera Battery Life

If you are going to be installing either a Blink or Ring Doorbell Camera that is wireless, the battery life is also an important consideration.

When it comes to battery life, there are a number of factors that can impact real-world battery life-such as temperature, settings, and how much the cameras are being used. So, it is important to take the “average” battery life with a grain of salt.

However, the Blink camera battery life specs are significantly better.

When comparing Ring vs Blink camera battery life, one can expect Blink batteries to perform “up to 2 years” vs. a claimed battery life of 6-12 months with a wireless Ring camera.

Depending on usage, I often cut those numbers in half to gauge realistic real-world expectations.
