Spectrum Home Security

Reputation and Credibility

Time Warner Cable was formed in 1989 when Time Inc. and Warner Cable merged. They entered the home security and automation industry in 2011 and rolled out Time Warner Cable IntelligentHome security services on a national level in 2013.

The TWC Intelligent Home security program is not available as a stand-alone service, as Time Warner Cable Security is only bundling the security packages with existing services within their own customer base. With services available in 29 states, they are the second largest cable provider.

Although they have an A  BBB rating, they are widely considered to have relatively poor customer service –coming in dead last in the Subscription Television Service division, scoring an abysmal 51 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index released in 2015.

TWC Spectrum Intelligent Home – Monitoring

Time Warner Cable requires an 18-month monitoring contract with basic monitoring starting at $39.99.

It also requires a minimum of their standard Broadband service which is regularly priced at $39.99.  ( as opposed to their lower priced “everyday” price of $14.99)

They operate their own UL Listed, Five Diamond Certified monitoring service.  Monitoring options are limited to their own broadband internet service, with a cellular back up in the event of a failure.

Time Warner Intelligent Home packages include interactive capabilities-enabling the user to monitor and control the system remotely.

They also offer packages that include enhanced video and home automation capabilities.

Spectrum Intelligent Home – Pricing and Equipment

Time Warner Intelligent Home -Security, Video View and Energy Package- $199.99

Security Package PLUS Video Camera AND Smart Thermostat

Basic equipment package pricing is included in the installation fees of the above packages.

They also offer an Upgrade Package, where they will take over an existing system- for $149. The equipment, provided by SMC, is proprietary, as opposed to a more recognized brand used by most of our top alarm companies.

Add-On equipment is also priced higher than most of our top-rated alarm companies, with additional door contacts running $70 and motion detectors are priced at $100.

In addition, because the equipment is proprietary it is not compatible with other security systems should you wish to switch to another security provider in the future.

As a matter of fact, when one scrutinizes the Intelligent Home Addendum, it clearly stated that you do not own the equipment and must return it to TWC in the event you no longer utilize their service.

“5. Your Responsibilities Regarding the Intelligent Home Equipment

  • The Time Warner Cable Equipment belongs to us and must be returned to us if you cease to receive the Intelligent Home Service for any reason.”

TWC Spectrum Home Security – Customer Service

Although they have an A BBB rating, TWC faces challenges in the customer service department.

Despite the fact that the Intelligent Home security program has only been available nationwide for about 2 years, internet review and forums are rife with negative reviews-centered around substandard installation, equipment issues, functionality and misinformation.

There is little evidence that the customer service associated with Intelligent Home security program will fare better  than their core business- Subscription Television Service… where they most recently came in last, with a horrendous score of 51 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index.

Spectrum Intelligent Home – Summary

The Time Warner Intelligent Home Security program offers a competitive security and home automation package on the higher end of the spectrum.

While we feel that there are much more attractive options offered by our top alarm companies, it may represent an acceptable security solution for a customer who wants the convenience of a single bill, and who has no interest in switching ISPs in the foreseeable future.

However, even an existing TWC Intelligent Home customer would be wise to check out other security options with our top alarm companies,  that specialize in home security and automation, before committing to even an 18 month contract.

There are much more attractive options in the marketplace.

A Contrast in Reputations

In contrast to  Frontpoint’s stellar reputation for providing an outstanding customer experience, Time Warner Cable customers have expressed a very dim view of the TWC customer experience by relegating Time Warner to the lowest rung of the Subscription Television Service division –scoring a dismal 51 on the 2015 American Consumer Satisfaction Index. These sentiments are reflected in many of the negative TWC Intelligent Home Security Reviews found online. On the other hand, the vast majority of Frontpoint Reviews reflect an extremely positive customer experience.Time Warner Intelligent Home Review- vs Frontpoint - Frontpoint Security While the Time Warner security system packages are competitively priced, their add-on sensors are roughly twice the cost of the Frontpoint sensors.  Upgrading the TWC system can prove to be an expensive proposition.

Frontpoint Security Equipment Ownership

Additionally, Frontpoint security systems are comprised of high quality GE and Qolsys components, and unlike the IntelligentHome system…you OWN the equipment, which is compatible with most of the other top  alarm company’s systems. The Intelligent Home components are proprietary, and the touchscreen control panel must be returned if service is discontinued. In addition, the Time Warner security system requires the customer to maintain their Standard Broadband service at $39.99…over and above the monthly monitoring rates- which START at $39.99. That’s a whopping $80/ mo.! Frontpoint Home Security monitoring starts at just $34.99 with 100% cellular monitoring…NO broadband service required.

Premium Frontpoint Monitoring Services

In addition, their premium services include such advanced monitoring features as Alarm.com’s Crash and Smash Protection and Geo Services. These services are unavailable on the Time Warner Intelligent Home system. Opt for the premium Qolsys IQ panel, and you’ll also get a 7” full color touchscreen display where you can view video displays, family photo slideshows and get weather reports and severe weather warnings. It will even capture a photo image of anyone who arms or disarms the system. So while choosing the Time Warner Cable IntelligentHome Security System might seem like a convenient security solution for TWC customers… For the BEST customer service and all around home security system, you want to talk to the folks at Frontpoint before signing on the dotted line!

What happens with my Spectrum Security Systems if I move?

What happens if I move?

As long as you move to an area that is serviced by Time Warner, you are in luck.  They will help you relocate the system at no charge (although, you will likely have to renew for another 18 months). However, if you move outside their service area, things get a bit tricky. You may be released from the contract, but you must return the equipment…and you may be stuck with equipment upgrades that you purchased that are now incompatible with other local or national home security companies. For this reason, I always recommend that you consider only name brand equipment like GE Interlogix, Honeywell, Qolsys or 2Gig which is compatible with other major home security providers.

Do I own the Spectrum Security equipment?

With Spectrum Security….do I own the equipment?

While you may retain ownership of any add-ons that are purchased separately (above package pricing), Time Warner Cable retains ownership of the control panel-even after you have satisfied the 18-month agreement is satisfied. This means that you will be billed for the replacement cost of the panel if you discontinue service if the panel is not returned in working and re-sellable condition.

How to Cancel Spectrum Home Security Contract

How to cancel Time Warner Spectrum Intelligent Home contract

Time Warner Security Contracts

Most home security companies require a 3 to 5-year monitoring contract when you sign up with the company.  This is a fairly standard practice in the alarm business and  Time Warner Home Security is no exception, although the contract term is a bit shorter. Once the contract is signed, the customer always has a 3 day right of rescission.

In many cases, DIY alarm companies offer a 14,30 or even 60-day return policy. However, if you are having a Spectrum Security system installed, you must act quickly to cancel the contract within 72 hours of the time the contract was signed. Once past the rescission or return period, one is typically responsible for all, or the majority of the monitoring payments for the full duration of the contract, even if one moves beyond the service area of the company.

So if you think you might be relocating, make sure that you have a clear understanding of your responsibilities to Spectrum before making a commitment.

Review terms of your Time Warner Home Security contract

Some of the other problem areas when it comes to the TWC Intelligent Home or other home security contracts are:

Escalation clauses– Many companies retain the right to increase the monitoring rate after the first year…even if the contract period is longer.

Auto-Renewal Clauses – Some contracts automatically renew on an annual, or even longer period once the initial term is completed unless the customer officially cancels the contract and meets the specified terms of cancellation.

Cancellation Terms -Often times, the contract must be terminated in writing, 30 or even 60 days prior to the end of the original contract.   Make sure that you get in touch with Spectrum Security customer service and understand exactly what criteria have to be met to terminate the agreement.

Be sure to follow up with Time Warner Security

When it comes time to end your contract, make sure that you take all the necessary steps, and document all communications.   We recommend that you:

  • Call– and document the call with time and contact information
  • Mail– Send notification by certified mail
  • E-Mail– with “read “receipt

Make sure all steps are well documented and save them where they can easily be retrieved in the event there is a dispute.  Also- make sure to monitor your bank account to ensure that there are no automatic debits after the agreed-upon date.

Cancel Spectrum

Switching to your next company

If you decide to cancel Spectrum Security, you are more likely to have a better idea what your ideal company should be like.  Our short home security quiz may help you narrow down the choices.

What do I do with my TWC Spectrum Security System?

Do I need to dispose of my Spectrum Security System?

It should be mentioned that the TWC Spectrum Security equipment will continue to function as a local system.  However, it will no longer be monitored or supported by Spectrum security services.

Spectrum Reviews best practices for disposal.

As part of their commitment to the environment, TWC Spectrum will accept returns of the control panel and Netgear WNR1000/2000 routers for recycling.  They can be returned to the nearest TWC Spectrum office or the UPS Store, at no cost.  Other components of the Spectrum Security system should be recycled responsibly.

Arming the Time Warner Intelligent Home

Spectrum Security Arming Modes on a Spectrum Home Security System

OFF – Even when your TWC Intelligent Home panel is turned off, many of the alerts are still active.  Your Spectrum Home Security system will still alert you if a door or window is opened and life and environmental safety systems (i.e. water or low temperature) are still active. Consequently, if a fire breaks out or there are excessive carbon monoxide emissions present, your system will still alert the Time Warner Home Security central monitoring station.

Stay–  You can arm just the perimeter protection at the doors and windows by arming your Time Warner Security system in the “stay” mode.  This will enable you to move about the house freely and still have a certain level of protection.

Away–  The away mode will activate any Spectrum Security System interior motion detectors as well as the doors and windows.

Instant – You can eliminate the entry delay on your Spectrum Home Security system by arming it in instant mode.

Duress –  You can set up a special duress code that will notify the Time Warner Security monitoring center that there is a potential hostage situation. If someone were to physically force you to disarm the system, this special code will trigger immediate emergency response.

Testing your TWC Spectrum Security System

How often do I need to test my Intelligent Home system?

It is recommended that you test the Time Warner security system at least once a month.  While you may not find it in your research of  Time Warner Security System reviews, it is not uncommon that some people may go months or even years without testing their Time Warner Intelligent Home system. Most people don’t realize it, but, even though the system is self-supervised, it is up to the owner to test the system periodically to ensure that the Spectrum Home Security System is operating correctly.

It is especially important to check the Spectrum Security system if there is a recent change in internet or phone system.

For information on how to test your system, reach out to Intelligent Home customer support.

How does the Time Warner Security Control Panel Compare?

Things to consider when comparing a TWC Spectrum Home Security alarm panel.

Top 5 things to examine in a Time Warner Home Security System Alarm Panel

When considering a Time Waner Security Alarm System, make sure you look into the following features.

  1. Encryption – Not all panels have adequate encryption to protect against modern-day hackers. Encrypted Sensors make it very difficult to hack.  If you are upgrading a system, that could mean having to upgrade all your sensors. Some panels, like the 2GIG GC2e, are also backward compatible with prior generations.
  2. Aesthetic and UI – Today’s panels should be sleeker and more modern, with capacitive touch screen controls.
  3. 2-Way Voice – Industry-leading panels offer 2-way voice capability that allows direct communication with the CMS when an alarm is triggered.
  4. Z-Wave Plus – This is a new-and-improved protocol, allowing home-automation products to have more battery power, higher functionality, longer range, and many more benefits over the original Z-Wave protocol
  5. Alarm App – Make sure that the security and home automation platform seamlessly integrates the entire system and enables remote management, observation, and control, from your smartphone, computer, or tablet with an internet connection. You can check Apple App Store or Google Play for ratings.

2018 Update

Our initial enthusiasm for Armorax has dropped off significantly as the company continues to show signs that it is struggling.

Drop in Armorax BBB Rating

The BBB rating has dropped off dramatically from an A(at the time of this Spectrum Home Security review)to a C+.  This is indicative that the company has not responded to customer complaints-even when they are lodged with the BBB. I our secret shopping efforts, we have found that even the sales department does not pick up the phone. Inbound calls are greeted by a voice mail that instructs then to contact 911 if this is an emergency…or to stay on the line for the sales department. After 2 or 3 minutes on hold, one is finally greeted by an answering service who will take a name and number for a return call. This makes one wonder what happens if I have a l problem with my system?

Frequent Equipment Changes

Additionally, Armorax has switched manufacturers three times over the past year.  They have switched from the state of the art 2 Gig line up, briefly offered the  Interlogix Somon XT, and are now offering the lesser known Resolution Helix panel.

Price Increases – Armorax DIY  vs Spectrum Home Security

They have also dramatically changed their monitoring rate structure three times in the past year. In online Armorax reviews, you will find that no two sites reflect the same pricing structure.  They originally offered no contract programs  and programs with Free equipment and monitoring rates as low as $19.99/mo.  There was a significant  a significant price advantage over  Intelligent Home, (their one time rate of $24.99/mo. for security and full home automation was an outstanding value, when our initial reviews and comparisons with TWC Intelligent Home (Now Spectrum Intelligent Home) were conducted…but, no longer available) Their current offering costs $99.00 up front and basic monitoring starts at $34.99 and the Mobile APP is extra!

Lack of Transparency

Moreover, the total lack of online transparency does little to inspire confidence.  Currently they have a one page website that offers little or no information on the company background, equipment, pricing, monitoring company and services, Mobile App, installation instructions or videos…or just about anything else that a potential customer might want to know. While the company showed great promise originally, we are no longer enthusiastic  about them as a solid alternative to Spectrum Home Security.   In our opinion, there are much better alternatives, such as Vivint (if you prefer professional installation) or Protect America and Frontpoint DIY alarms .

Armorax DIY or TWC Security Professional Install?

Like all the telecom companies, Time Warner Cable  tries to convince that you will save money by bundling your home security system with the rest of their services. They offer professional installation for $99-$199. When you find out t just how simple DIY alarm installations you’ll want to pocket that $200 bucks and you will be amazed at how much more you can save when you find out how much less “unbundled” cellular security and home automation can be.

Time Warner Cable IntelligentHome Alarms  are professionally installed, but that is not necessarily  a good thing.  It really depends on how good the installer you get is. Just because they can install cable doesn’t necessarily make them a professional alarm installer. In addition to hardware and software issues, online TWC Security reviews often express  disappointment and frustrations with poorly trained or inexperienced installers.

There was a time when home security systems required professional installation . Security systems used to be complicated and require drilling holes, fishing wires and programming systems. Today,  modern wireless technologies have evolved to the point where installing a security system from a reputable DIY Alarm Company means mounting a few sensors and calling in to activate the system. Armorax pre-programs and configures the system before shipping it out…so installation is a snap. Consequently, over 90% of DIY alarm customers found the system “easy to install”.

Reputation

Armorax has a similar  BBB Rating  They are  fully accredited with the BBB , and have  complied an  impressive 88% positive reviews on the BBB reviews page.  This translates to a 4.67 out of 5 stars! On the other hand Time Warner Cable is one of the most maligned companies in the country. Changing the name to Spectrum, under Charter Communication doesn’t erase that. They came in dead last, scoring a 51 on the American Consumer Satisfaction Rating in 2015.   In comparison, they received 93% negative reviews from customers on the BBB ratings page.

Armorax Pricing

Armorax believes in keeping it simple.  Offer the best for less.  Their pricing structure crushes the competition. The standard Armorax Blackbox system is a top of the line 2Gig Technologies  GC2, and it is FREE with a 36 month monitoring agreement! Armorax add on sensors are roughly half the price of professionally installed components.  See how much you can save on add ons by calling 866-355-0640. Unlike TWC Security, you are not purchasing  proprietary equipment with an Armorax security system….and you actually own ALL the equipment. Time Warner Cable retains ownership of the control panel. Time Warner Cable retains ownership of the control panel-which must be returned when the service is terminated. Any add optional equipment you purchase is not likely compatible with most major security companies.  That means that you will have to start fresh and purchase new equipment when you switch providers. But, the monthly  monitoring rate is where Armorax really outshines the competition. Armorax  Cellular Monitoring, with full Alarm.com services is just $24.95! And that is not bare boned monitoring it includes:

  • Alarm.com
  • Interactive Service- Arm/Disarm/Notifications and Alerts
  • Comprehensive Home Automation
  • Video Surveillance Monitoring/Management
  • Crash and Smash
  • Geo Services….and more.

All for $24.95/mo.

And that is NOT an introductory price.  That includes a Rate Lock Guarrantee!

IntelligentHome  Pricing

With IntelligentHome Security System, you will be required to pay $99.00- $199.00 up front for installation. If you wish to add to the standard equipment packages, additional sensors can get pretty expensive .  This can drive the costs up hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, the  equipment is also proprietary to their system, and you will likely have buy new equipment with  another security service provider. After any introductory discounts…Intelligent Home monitoring rates range start at $39.95. Armorax rates are locked in at $24.95/mo…..and you own ALL the equipment once you have satisfied the 36 month agreement.  Do with it as you please..but, you can lock in that rate as long as you remain a customer.  For $24.95 a month….who wouldn’t?

Armorax recognized as Top DIY Alarm Company

With a  comprehensive interactive cellular monitoring rate of just $24.95/mo., Armorax is taking the alarm industry by storm.  And they don’t stop there. They combine low,low monitoring rates with the top of the line, 2 Gig Technologies Go! Control system! In recognition of superior value, Armorx received our Silver  Award 2017 Top 5 Best Home Security Companies- Armoraxas one of the TOP Home Security Companies of 2017. While the telecom companies all try to convince you that you will save by bundling their services, after the first year, the honeymoon is over. Let’s take a look at those alleged bundling savings…

Is IntelligenHome  intelligent financially?

In addition to up to $200 in  installation fees, IntelligentHome monitoring rates start at about 60% higher than Armorax.  You can easily spend more than double the Armorax rate with a comprehensive TWC Security and Home Automation System. Bundling…schmundling.  You save hundreds of dollars a year with Armorax. IntelligentHome  Security Systems require an upfront installation fee of up to $200, and charge higher monitoring rates for packages that require additional services.  Ultimately TWC Security ends up  costing more than twice as much per month on more comprehensive packages.

Interactive Features

TWC monitoring includes a full portfolio of security and home automation services which utilize their proprietary app for interactive services. Armorax uses award winning Interactive Platform is provided by Alarm.com. It is by far the most stable and feature rich interactive platform and includes:

  • Smash and Crash Protection– alerts the central station of an intrusion- even if the system is destroyed
  • Geo Fencing– uses GPS location on your cell phone to automatically control security and home automation functions
  • Power Outage Notification – if there is loss of power, the system sends you an alert

These features are showcased by the  Armorax Blackbox which features  a premium touchscreen  2Gig GC2 control panel Ackerman Alarm Review- 2Gig Control Panelwhich  can display local weather 5 day forecasts and provide severe weather warnings in an emergency. The GC2 is  equipped with an integrated Z-Wave communication module which enables comprehensive home automation and management capability of virtually any Z-Wave compatible device! There is a nominal fee of just $49.95 to upgrade to the GC3, which gives you additional features and capabilities and a full 7″ touchscreen display.

Summary

Armorax provides top of the line, DIY security and home automation products with rock bottom  cellular monitoring rates that include Alarm.com services.  With a FREE premium  system and full featured monitoring services for $24.95/mo, Armorax blows away any bundled telecom company rates.

Does Time Warner Security require Spectrum ISP connection?

Time Warner Intelligent Home Security ISP Requirements

Charter Communications has merged Time Warner Security Services and is still supporting Spectrum Home Security systems-even though they are no longer aggressively pursuing new customers.

Those with TWC Intelligent home systems might wish to retain their existing Spectrum Security systems…and pursue other options for cable, phone and internet services. Previously, TWC Intelligent Home customers were lead to believe this was not possible.

However, it would appear that this is not the case….and if you are happy with your Spectrum Security system, you may indeed maintain the Time Warner Security service and switch out the other Spectrum services.

The following customer review was written by a former Spectrum employee who owns a TWC Intelligent Hom. It first appeared on The Home Alarm Report

Spectrum/TWC/Charter Internet is NOT required.

I am a former TWC/Spectrum Employee. When I left the company, I switched over all of my services to AT&T Fiber. The only service I kept was ” TWC Intelligent Home.”

When I called Charter to cancel the rest of my services, they told me that my “Intelligent Home” would not work on another ISP. However….when I told them it has been working just fine on AT&T’s fiber for more than 6 months, they begrudgingly told me “Yes, it will work just fine on any other ISP…..”

So, fast-forward about 1 yr. The only service I have from TWC/Charter/Spectrum is their “Time Warner Intelligent Home” Security Offering…and it has performed flawlessly ever since.

Disclosure: TWC/Charter DID use to require a separate cable-modem for the system to work properly. However, since about 2012, they no longer have this requirement. Instead of a cable modem, they provide you with a very “locked-down” Netgear Router. As long as that router can reach the internet, you’re good to go. (Additionally, you’ve got the GSM Cellular back-up as well…)

So….in conclusion, if you can get a good deal on install as I did, then you only need to worry about the $39.99/month monitoring. Because, again, you DO NOT NEED TWC/Charter/Spectrum Internet in order for the system to work, 100%. They may TELL you that you do…..but that is incorrect info. Believe me, I know, I worked for TWC/Charter/Spectrum for over 10yrs.

While this customer elected to keep their Spectrum Home Security, you may want to explore alternative options and take a look at our 2019 Top Alarm Systems.

What should Time Warner Home Security customers do about the recent data breach?

Do Time Warner Security customers need to worry about Amazon data breach?

While recent headlines reported millions of records of legacy Time Warner Cable customers had been found which were unprotected on an Amazon server, it would appear that potential risks for TWC Intelligent Home owners can be relatively easily mitigated. A statement released by Charter communications, which controls Spectrum Security, suggests that Time Warner Home Security customers and all others using the MyTWC App change their user names and passwords to minimize the risk of exposure and ensure customer privacy.

7 Things the TWC Spectrum Security App Can Do.

TWC Spectrum Security APP

  • TWC Spectrum Cameras – Spectrum Home Security Compatible Cameras allow you to record video or watch in real time- right through the app. A Spectrum Security Camera lets you oversee your pets and observe the children as they arrive home from school.

Do I need a landline for Spectrum Home Security monitoring?

Intelligent Home Monitoring Options

A Spectrum Security system does not require a landline for monitoring. From a security standpoint, cellular monitoring is the preferred method for monitoring an Intelligent Home security system.  There are no phone or cable wires that can be cut to compromise the transmission of a signal to the Time Warner Home Security monitoring station. While some Spectrum Security reviews might complain about the additional expense of a cellular connection, the owners of many Intelligent Home systems are saving money by eliminating the landline completely. A Spectrum Home Security system utilizes the cable connection as the primary means of communication, with cellular backup.

How do I design a Spectrum Intelligent Home?

Designing your Intelligent Home with the TWC Spectrum  Security System

Designing Your Spectrum Security System - Intelligent Home Design Infographic

Perimeter Protection – The first line of defense in your Spectrum Home Security system is perimeter protection.  A Spectrum Intelligent Home  should start with deterring potential intruders with yard signs, window stickers and outdoor cameras.  In addition, doors should have solid locks and be contacted along any vulnerable floor windows.

Interior Protection- If entry is gained, there should be a second line of defense.  TWC Spectrum motion detectors can be placed strategically in high value areas or hallways through which an intruder would pass. Additional keypads or panic buttons can be placed in key areas like a bedroom or office. Indoor Spectrum Security cameras can be set up to monitor any part of the home.

Asset protection- Spectrum Intelligent Home Contacts can also be placed to protect areas of special concern such as gun cabinets or offices to protect high value assets. In some cases, you might want to set up sensors so that, if they are tripped, they will only notify you through your TWC Spectrum App, without setting off the alarm.

Environmental Protection – The Spectrum Alarm System can also be set up to detect environmental hazards such as fire, carbon monoxide, flooding or freezing. There are special Spectrum Home Security sensors for each of these applications.

Home Automation- Spectrum Security systems can serve as the central hub to control lighting, cameras, heat and air conditioning, doors and garage door openers. The TWC Spectrum Home Security System can be set up so you can control almost any home automation function remotely on the Spectrum Security App.

Spectrum Intelligent Home Equipment Pricing

What are the Spectrum Home Security Prices for add-ons?

While Charter Communications is no longer actively marketing the Spectrum Intelligent Home program to new customers, existing customers can add-on components to their current systems.

However, because the future of the Intelligent Home is unclear, we would suggest that it may make more sense to look at alternative programs such as Protect America, Frontpoint or Vivint before investing in additional equipment.

 Time Warner Cable Security Add-Ons:

  • Smoke Detector – $80
  • Carbon Monoxide Detector – $85
  • Glass Break Detector – $125
  • Door/Window Sensor – $40
  • Motion Detector – $75
  • Flood Detector – $60
  • Spectrum Security Cameras -Indoor – $110
  • Key FOB – $60
  • Wireless Keypad – $80
  • Thermostat – $110
  • Lamp/Appliance Adapter – $50

These prices do not reflect any installation or service call charges.

Can I use sensors to protect a gun cabinet with Intelligent Home?

Special Uses for TWC Spectrum Security Sensors

Standard door or window sensors can be used in a variety of ways to make your Time Warner Intelligent Home more secure.

Your door sensors can be placed in a non-reporting mode, if you don’t want the alarm to be activated.  The siren won’t go off, and no signal will be sent to Spectrum Security, but you will recieve a notification on your IntelligentHome App when the sensor is triggered. Then you can check things out on your Time Warner Security Camera.

Some non-reporting uses might be:

Gun Cabinet – Protecting your weapons from unauthorized or unsupervised use will help prevent tragedy. In addition to locking your gun cabinet, with your Spectrum security system, you can add a second layer of protection by mounting a sensor on the door. This will send a text or e-mail alert if it is accessed.

Medicine and Liquor Cabinets- Your liquor and medicine cabinets can be monitored as well. With TWC Intelligent Home systems, you may even be able to set up a medicine cabinet to alert you if it has not been opened within a certain time period. This can serve as a reminder to take critical medications on time.

Hazardous Materials-  Want to go the extra mile in childproofing your home.  Place a contact on any cabinet within a child’s reach that might contain harmful or toxic materials.  It can be set to sound the chime feature on your security system, without actually setting off any Time Warner alarms.

Tool Shed- If the tool shed is located within the range of the hub of you Spectrum Home security system, a sensor can be placed on the door of your tool shed as well. However, keep in mind that the elements can affect the sensors.  You may need to look into heavy duty outdoor sensors.

Mailbox- Want a heads up that the mail has been delivered?  TWC Intelligent Home Sensors could be placed on the mailbox to let you know.

Pool Gate – For families with young children, having a pool can also be cause for concern. Time Warner Alarms can help you keep track of anyone who opens your pool gate with a magnetic sensor.  Call Spectrum Security customer care  to see what sensors are best suited to your type/style of gate.

Outdoor applications may not be available in some areas. Mounting on certain surfaces can be problematic.  Also, the proximity to the main hub of Spectrum Home security system may be too far for a good signal.

Additionally,  the weather conditions in your region of the country may be too extreme for basic sensors.  There are, however, special weatherproof sensors that may be available for your application.

Contact the Time Warner Security customer service department for recommendations for the ideal solution to your application.

Does a Spectrum Alarm System require a permit?

Do I need an alarm permit to install a  TWC Spectrum Home Security system?

Strictly speaking, you do not need a permit if the system is not going to be professionally monitored.  However, because a TWC IntelligentHome alarm system is being remotely monitored with the intent of utilizing emergency response services, many local municipalities will require a permit. In most cases, this involves basic registration with your local police or sheriff’s department and a nominal fee.  You will likely also be required to provide the name, address, and phone number of Time Warner Security, as well as the monitoring station if the two companies are different.

Where permits are required, most municipalities will require a one-time fee to register your system, although some cities require an annual renewal as well. In municipalities with high crime and false alarm rates,  failure to register your TWC Intelligent Home system can result in a refusal to respond to locations that do not have an alarm permit…although this is fairly rare.  However, you may be subject to additional fines if police, fire, or emergency medical services are dispatched to a location without a permit in municipalities where one is required.

Even when a permit is obtained, most communities will assess fines for multiple false alarms. Most communities have policies in place in which the first 1 or 2 dispatches do not involve fines.  After that fines typically escalate from $25-50 for the first enforceable offense…to $100-200 for subsequent repeat offenses. Consequently, it is very important that alarm system owners contact their local police department, find out what permits are required, get a full understanding of the local policy and make sure they take the necessary steps to prevent false alarms.

  • Be certain that the insurer realizes whether or not the system will be monitored as well as whether or not things such as fire, flood and freeze protection has been incorporated in your security system. Things to discuss with your family prior to selecting a TWC Spectrum Intelligent Home System?

There are numerous considerations that you should ask yourself before buying Time Warner Security (Spectrum), along with any other system for that matter. When it comes to choosing the best home security systems, because you might be committing to a 2,3 or Five-year contract, it is essential to look at a variety of variables before signing on the dotted line.

It doesn’t matter if anyone came knocking on your door, called you on the phone, or maybe you are answering some sort of sleek full-page color advertisement that may arrive in your most recent bill….it is very important to make certain you get full knowledge of all the alternatives available to you to make the most appropriate evaluation possible.

DIY or Professional TWC Spectrum Security Set up?

One of the primary factors to consider is whether you intend to install the unit personally or provide for an expert installation. Historically, systems needed to be hard-wired directly into your home. This certainly would call for drilling and cutting holes into the walls, fishing wiring, and complicated mounting anas well as considerable programming.

However…times have definitely evolved. Even the companies which usually professionally install the systems are now working with, for the most part, wireless devices. The technology continues to be dramatically improved over time to really make the products especially intuitive…and also more capable.

Do it yourself alarm providers have actually vastly streamlined the installation processes so that you can keep it uncomplicated even for the most technologically-challenged individuals. While Time Warner Security is professionally installed, it is still a wireless system.  The Intelligent Home does not require and holes, wiring, or drilling.

Nevertheless, Time Warner Internet reviews complain often cite issues with  TWC Intelligent Home installation and service. Hopefully, with the transition to TWC Spectrum Security…Charter Spectrum Reviews will be more positive.

The better DIY companies, such as Frontpoint Security and Protect America will pre-program the whole system prior to mailing it out, to make sure all the operator needs to do is mount the gear and simply contact the company to have the system activated.

Potential benefits to DIY Install over TWC Spectrum Intelligent Home Pro Install

  • More Cost-Effective– Installing a DIY system can save a substantial amount of money.  While upfront costs might be about the same on smaller “basic” systems, the equipment costs on TWC Spectrum professionally installed systems are typically much higher.
  • No Contracts –  Most professionally installed systems will require a 3-5 year contract. The Spectrum Intelligent Home is less…but, many DIY alarms, such as Frontpoint are now month to month.
  • No Waiting– Once the equipment has arrived, there is no need to take time off from work or schedule an installation time. You can get started right away at a time that is convenient for you. With an Intelligent Home, you will have to take time off from work and schedule an appointment with a technician-during normal business hours.
  • Enhances Familiarity– By becoming actively involved in the entire process, homeowners and renters who install their own systems are more engaged and become more familiar with all the features and operation of their systems. This ultimately leads to a better ownership experience.
  • Portability– Because the system is wireless- when you move,  it moves with you….and there are no additional moving or associated installation costs. With TWC Spectrum, you may not be able to get service in many areas.
  • No strangers in your home – While TWC Spectrum takes great care in hiring technicians…they sometimes have to use 3rd party sub-contractors.  If you truly require professional installation, make sure that your technician has been properly vetted-background checked and drug tested.  With a DIY wireless system, why take a chance?

TWC Spectrum Security Reviews-

Though an expertly installed system would definitely require less effort, the vast majority learned that the equipment made available through the top Do-it-yourself security providers were actually simple to put in, uncomplicated, and simply saved these folks a significant amount compared to a system that is professionally installed, such as Intelligent Home.

Should you opt for professional installation, and get a TWC SpectrumIntelligent Home from  Time Warner Security, you should definitely inquire how skilled your installer is along with whether they have been background checked as well as subject to the drug screening process. Make sure you ask whether or not the supplier has got their own personnel or just utilizes Third-party subcontractors.

Making use of subcontractors isn’t necessarily bad (they might even possess more expertise when compared with company employees) nevertheless make sure they ought to have completed extensive screening before permitting them into your home.

Local vs .. Nationwide- Is TWC Intelligent Home the intelligent choice?

When  picking the proper security firm that will protect your household and family members, we advise selecting a national home security company with  a reliable background and extensive expertise in home security systems. Ideally, one that supports and services your systems anywhere in the country. With all the changes and uncertainty in the transition from Time Warner and Spectrum, it is difficult to predict the future of the TWC Intelligent Home program. In light of these changes, if you are looking for a professionally installed system from the most highly recognized name in home security, it might make sense to check into ADT Home Security.

The system can typically be put on “Instant” setting in the event that everybody is home. The siren will go off after any delay in cases where  the system is not disarmed. Monitoring center response times are usually calculated from the time that a signal is received to the point in time the dispatcher contacts your house to verify the alert. These times really really need to be inside a sixty seconds. If no person answers from the household, under normally scenarios, they will seek to get hold of any individual listed on the emergency call list …and they then dispatch the police.
