Vector Home Security
Reputation and Credibility
Founded in 1970, Vector Security has over 45 years of experience designing, selling, installing, servicing, and monitoring home and business security systems. They have over 300,000 customers and are Ranked #9 in the SDM Top 100.
Despite a fair amount of negative online reviews, Vector has earned an A+ BBB rating with just 25 complaints lodged in the past 3 years.
Headquartered in Warrendale. PA…they have corporate offices in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas Pennsylvania, & Virginia. They have an authorized dealer network that serves Serving Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas, and Massachusetts.
If you live outside this service area, you should check out our Top Alarm Companies.
Monitoring and the Vector Security App
Vector does not outsource its monitoring services and owns and operates its own UL Listed, Five Diamond Certified monitoring station. Nor do they outsource their interactive services connectivity platform. They use their own proprietary Vector Security App.
The Vector alarm app allows you to control your home automation features, such as monitoring a doorbell camera or carbon monoxide detectors.
Vector Home Security Monitoring includes:
- Home Monitored Alarms
- Home Video Surveillance
- Home Environmental Hazards
- Home Energy Management
- Remote Lock Solutions
- Personal Emergency Response Systems
- Home Technologies
- Vector Security App- Mobile Solutions
While most are pretty standard home security system offerings, Vector does offer whole-home audio installation services to round out their smart home automation installation service offerings.
All packages require a minimum 3 Year Monitoring Contract. (Note: Many online Vector Security reviews complain of 60-month contracts and auto-renewal clauses…so be sure to read the contract carefully and make sure that you understand the terms of the contract.)
Their monitoring services include the basic equipment listed below with $0 Upfront …and range from $39.95 to $69.95 as follows:
Basic Security- $39.95
- Wireless Control Panel
- 3 Door/Window Sensors
- 1 Motion Sensor
Home Automation- $49.95
- Components in Basic Security Package..PLUS
- 1 Appliance/Lamp Module
- Vector Security App – Mobile Solutions
Connected Home – $69.95 (+ $99 Installation Fee)
- Components in Home Automation Package- Plus
- 1 Indoor Camera
- 1 Door Lock
- 1 Thermostat
These prices seem a bit high…but, reasonably competitive given the fact that they include additional equipment. But, prices can increase substantially when equipment is added.
Vector Pricing and Equipment
With good credit, Vector will install a basic security system with $0 upfront costs and a minimum 3-year monitoring contract. The installation is handled by either a company-employed installer or an authorized local dealer.
There is little transparency on the website regarding pricing until you enter an address that falls within their service area.
Most of the emphasis on the site is on scheduling an in-home sales presentation with a Vector salesperson or a salesperson from an authorized dealer. If you don’t want to risk the prospect of a high-pressure sales pitch, and just want pricing, you can also get current pricing online by completing a form with contact and residence information.
When we completed an online price quote (see the section below on Vector online ordering), we found that there were substantial additional monthly charges for home automation equipment. We do not know if this was an issue with the online ordering system-so be sure that you get clarification before ordering a Vector Home Security system online.
When you are looking at the price of the equipment…make sure that you add in the TOTAL long-term costs that are incorporated into the monthly charges as well.
Vector Alarm Customer Service
Vector has an A+ BBB rating, with just 25 complaints filed over the past few years.
This does not seem to be reflected in the online community- as there seems to be a disproportionate percentage of very negative reviews.
Online reviews, forums, and feedback indicate that there are a great number of customers that have felt misled regarding contract terms-some of whom claim that there were never made aware of auto-renewal clauses that extend the terms of the contract up to 3 years if they fail to provide written 60-day notice.
Vector Home Security Alarm Summary
Vector offers professionally installed security and home automation systems in larger metropolitan areas in roughly a third of the states in the US.
While they offer $0 down programs to homeowners with good credit, their monitoring prices are significantly higher than many of our top-rated companies ….and those monthly prices can skyrocket depending on your equipment configurations.
In addition, they struggle with a negative online perception as a result of business practices that include allegations of aggressive sales tactics, misrepresentation, and issues with auto-renewal clauses.
In light of all of these issues, we recommend that you research the local dealer, and explore the more transparent sales approaches of our top alarm companies before making any long-term commitment.

More Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Vector Alarm System compare with the top competition?
Vector Home Security is the 9th largest home security company in the US and has a network of authorized dealers that cover metropolitan areas in a bit more than a third.
If you want a nationally recognized company with professional installation and are looking for an alternative to ADT, Protection One, and Vivint. Vector offers a $0 upfront program…but, one would be well advised to scrutinize the contract carefully and beware of exceptionally high monthly charges- to which you are contractually bound for 3 years.
Additionally, make sure that you understand the provisions for canceling the contract after the initial term, as online reviewers have complained of a rarely mentioned “auto-renewal” clause that will obligate you to those same terms long after the equipment has been paid for.

Vector Home Security vs Vivint
So how does Vector Home Security stand up to Vivint?
Vivint commands the number three position in the SDM Top 100, but Vector is still in the top 10. However, Vivint has a much wider service area, which can be important if one needs to move to another part of the country.
Ironically, both companies offer their own proprietary mobile applications. While Vivint is rated slightly higher, the Vector Security App is a solid performer.
When purchasing a Vector Alarm, it can become very confusing with equipment costs being partially rolled into the monthly monitoring rates.
Vivint has recently introduced their innovative Flexpay option. They have simplified their monitoring packages and separated the equipment charges to enhance transparency.
You can elect to just pay for the equipment up front or finance the equipment over 42-60 months with 0% interest.
If you purchase the Vivint equipment outright…there is no monitoring contract required!
Vivint Advantages
• Standard Touchscreen Keypad
• Professionally Installed – no additional cost

Vector Home Security vs Frontpoint Security
Vector Home Security vs. Frontpoint Security
On the Frontpoint site, you will find pricing, equipment, monitoring rates, ownership and warranty policies all clearly spelled out. Vector Security is much less transparent. Equipment and Monitoring Frontpoint uses GE Interlogix and Qolsys equipment.
Frontpoint systems come standard with Cellular monitoring and start at just $99.00.…with extremely competitive pricing on their add on sensors. Monitoring costs run from $34.95-$49.95…and all included features are clearly defined. Vector monitoring rates start at $39.95 with security and home automation rates that start at $69.95 with a $99 Installation.
With Frontpoint– you can opt for either a One or Three year agreement….which then converts to a month to month payment- requiring just a 30 day notice.
Vector Reviews cite contract complaints
With Vector, you have a 3 year contract, and many Vector reviews claim that there are auto-renewal provisions that make it very difficult to cancel. Vector security reviews claim this auto-renewal clause that may obligate you to as much as 3 more years of service..and that they require 60 days advance written notice to cancel…or else the contract renews for the full term.
Frontpoint vs. Vector – a different approach… While a Vector dealer will typically send a salesman to your home to provide pricing and system details…Frontpoint provides and pre-configures a premium DIY alarm system to your specifications.
You merely have to mount the wireless sensors and call in to activate. And … you have you 30 days to try the system to make sure it is right for you….No pressure…no gimmicks…no restocking fees. Most Frontpoint customers will save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars over a professionally installed competitor- without the prospect of having to deal with a “high pressure” salesman in the home – or the hassles of scheduling and allowing strangers in the home to install the system.
Frontpoint Security delivers state of the art, DIY security and home automation products with the very best customer service in the industry.

The most common complaints are:
- Failure to clearly disclose terms of the contract
- 60-month contracts
- 60-day cancellation notice
- Auto-Renewal Clauses
Canceling a Vector Alarm Contract
How to Cancel a Vector Contract
Vector Home Security Contracts
The majority of alarm companies require a 3 to 5-year monitoring contract.
This is a common practice in the alarm business and Vector Home Security is no exception. However, in addition to the lengthy contract, they also employ an auto-renewal clause. This means the contract will automatically renew at the end of the initial term if you don’t send in a written cancellation notice.
NO Trial period
DIY alarm companies typically offer a 14,30 or even 60-day return policy.
However, if you are having a Vector Security system installed, you must act quickly to cancel the contract within 72 hours of the time the contract was signed. After that, you will likely be held responsible for all, or the majority of the monitoring payments for the full duration of the contract, even if you move beyond the service area of the company.
Relocation
Vector is a regional security company…and does not service customers outside a limited service area. So if you think you might be relocating, make sure that you have a clear understanding of your responsibilities to before making a commitment.
Review the Terms of Your Vector Alarm Monitoring contract
Some of the other problem areas when it comes to some security companies, including the Vector Alarm contracts are:
Escalation clauses– Many companies retain the right to increase the monitoring rate after the first year…even if the contract period is longer.
Auto-Renewal Clauses – Some contracts automatically renew on an annual, or even longer period once the initial term is completed unless the customer officially cancels the contract and meets the specified terms of cancellation.
Cancellation Terms -Oftentimes, the contract must be terminated in writing, 30 or even 60 days prior to the end of the original contract. Make sure that you get in touch with Vector Home Security customer service and understand exactly what criteria have to be met to terminate the agreement.
Be Sure to Follow Up
When it comes time to end your contract, make sure that you take all the necessary steps and document all communications. We recommend that you:
Call– and document the call with time and contact information
Mail– Send notification by certified mail
E-Mail– with “read “receipt
Make sure all steps are well documented and save them where they can easily be retrieved in the event there is a dispute. Also- make sure to monitor your bank account to ensure that there are no automatic debits after the agreed upon date.

Designing a Vector Home Security System
Designing your Vector Home Security System
Perimeter Protection – If you are looking to set up a Vector Alarm system, the 1st step is to protect the perimeter of your property. Begin by installing sensors at your doors and any vulnerable windows, but don’t forget to place yard signs, window stickers and Vector Security cameras where they are readily visible.
Interior Protection – Your Vector Alarm system should also include a second line of defense. Motion sensors can be placed in areas that will detect an intruder if they get past the perimeter protection. Additional keypads or panic buttons can also be mounted in an office or bedroom. Vector Security cameras can be set up to monitor strategic areas, as well.
Asset Protection- Your Vector Alarm system also allows you to set up certain sensors as “non-reporting. This means that, if they are set off, they will only send a signal you through Vector Security App. It will not activate the siren or send a signal to the monitoring sensors. Sensors can be mounted to gun cabinets, medicine or liquor cabinets or office doors.
Environmental Protection – Your Vector Home Security system can also be set up to monitor environmental hazards such as fire, carbon monoxide, flooding or freezing.
Home Automation- Vector Alarm systems can serve as the home automation hub to control lighting, cameras, heat and air conditioning, doors and garage door openers. Your Vector Alarm system can control virtually any home automation function remotely on the Vector Security App.

Getting the most bang for you buck when customizing a Vector Security System
Things to Consider When Installing a Custom Vector Home Security system.
Before deciding on how to best customize your Vector alarm system, make sure that they can provide the equipment you require for a fully customized and cost-effective system. For a truly custom install and to get the most bang for your buck, make sure the system you choose has the versatility and can accommodate the multi-function components described below.
1 The best home security companies offer a full line of “take-over” devices that allow you to upgrade your current security equipment to the most advanced system available. If you are upgrading a system with a fair amount of existing equipment, this is an important consideration.
2 Top alarm companies offer multiple specialized sensor options for your doors and windows include recessed, plunger, and bypass – providing custom solutions for nearly any installation scenario.
3 It is optimal to be able to open and close your garage door with the same keyfob you use for your alarm system. You can also control it with a smartphone thanks to Z-wave products that interface with most garage door brands.
4 Protect your home from frozen and broken water pipes and furnace and air conditioning failure with this multi-purpose sensor. Check to see if multi-function sensors are available with your system.
5 Triple-duty detectors can activate your alarm system when it senses smoke and high and low temperatures.

How to Prevent Hackers from Violating a Vector Alarm System
Vector Reviews Provide Tips for Making
Your Vector Alarm Safe from Hackers
How to prevent hackers from using Vector Alarm smart home devices and Vector Security Cameras to access your network!
The IoT (Internet of Things) allowing common household fixtures and appliances to be controled through a mobile app can be a double-edged sword. A large percentage of consumers across the United Sates are combining security and automation by integrating smart home devices into their security systems. This kind of connected home package lets you manage aalmost any facet of your home seamlessly on your Vector Mobile app.
However, these conveniences can also create new vulnerabilities that can be utilized by possible intruders.
If you are considering adding smart home devices to your home, it is important to take some additional steps to ensure that your home network is well defended.
Steps to Protect Your Vector Alarm Network
Research the Device
If you are adding a 3rd party device to your Vector Home Security System, be certain to purchase the device from a recognized company that takes security seriously. A good company will have password protection, one or two-step authentication and be committed to periodic over the air firmware and security updates.
Register the Device
Be sure to register your equipment, not only for warranty purposes but to ensure that you are receiving any firmware updates. It is important to stay current with the latest versions of the software. Often they address any known vulnerabilities.
Pay Attention to Passwords
Change default passwords, immediately. Passwords should be comprised of a variety of letters, cases, numbers, and symbols that would be difficult to guess.
Use unique passwords for every device. If your password for one item is jeopardized, you are not permitting access to all your sensitive accounts.
Create a Secure Wi-Fi Network
It is also recommended in some Vector reviews, that you take steps to protect your entire home network. Make sure that you have changed the name of the network and default password. Pick a network name that doesn’t give away your location or individual details.
With some routers, you can set up a Wi-Fi network specifically for your smart home devices. This will allow you to segregate your “smart home” network and make it harder for hackers from accessing the network where you do your banking and store your sensitive information.
It is also a good idea to set up a Guest network for visitors’ smartphones and computers, where they can’t see or access your IoT devices.
Consider Professional Installation
IFor some people this might sound complicated. (It’s really not) If this sounds like you, you may want to opt for a company that offers professional installation with built-in smart home integration. Technicians should be well versed in optimizing the security of your network and be able to help you incorporate some more advanced security measures.
Reset to Factory Default Settings
Before you dispose of, sell or give away any smart devices, make sure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions to remove all of your data.
Vector Security Online Pricing
Vector Home Security Online Pricing
When we updated our Vector Alarm Review for 2019, we were disappointed to find that there seemed to be little pricing transparency. However, when we entered information that fit within their somewhat limited service area, we were able to get what appeared to be fairly straightforward pricing information. Although the packages were a bit on the high side…they weren’t terribly out of sync with industry standards.
However, when we added additional equipment to the packages, we found that the package prices increased significantly. (Note-screenshot taken directly from Vector website…see date in bottom right corner- 7.2.19)
The equipment pricing in this package is quite reasonable…but, the monitoring rate has ballooned to well over $100 a month.
Perhaps this is some sort of glitch in the online ordering system, but, we strongly recommend that you get clarification if you are ordering Vector Alarm Security online….
Does a Vector Alarm require a landline for monitoring?
Vector Security Reviews – Monitoring Alternatives
A Vector alarm does not require a landline for monitoring. However, cellular monitoring is the best option for monitoring a Vector home security system. That way there are are no phone or cable wires that can be cut to stop an alarm signal from getting to the monitoring station.
Moreover, cellular or cable connections are required for the Vector Security App. While some Vector alarm reviews note the additional expense of a cellular connection, many Vector home security system owners are defraying Vector security prices by eliminating the landline completely.
Home Child Safety Tips for Vector Alarm System Customers
After Installing Vector Security Systems – Tips on Keeping Children Safe in Your Home
Even though a Vector Home Security System can help protect your children against burglaries, child abductions, home invasions, and fires…it can’t necessarily keep kids safe from accidental death or injury in and around the home.
Following are some basic reminders of things you can do to help provide a safer environment.
Child Safety Tips
- Never Leave a Child Unattended in or Around Water
- Childproof Electrical Outlets

Vector Garage Security
Should I Include my garage in my Vector Alarm System?
If the budget will allow it, it is typically a good investment to include some additional prot5ection for the garage.
After all, most garages are home to one or more vehicles, expensive tools, sporting goods, and lawn and garden equipment.
If you are already investing in monitoring, the monthly cost should remain the same. Because they will be professionally installed, the equipment costs will likely be quite a bit higher than DIY alternatives.
However, there are some advantages.
Advantages of Including the Garage in Your Vector Home Security System
Quality – First of all, if you are buying components from them, you know that they have been tested, tried, and proven in the field. The best home security providers aren’t going to use shoddy equipment that will result in complaints, service issues, and lost monitoring customers.
Service – If you do have service or support issues, it is best to consolidate those issues with one provider. It affords you additional leverage and prevents you from having to track down support numbers and deal with multiple providers.
Selection – Vector offers a wide selection of security and home automation equipment that is compatible with their equipment and home automation platforms. You won’t have to worry about getting devices that won’t play well with your other equipment.
Installation – Vector Home Security equipment is professionally installed and you will have an experienced support team that can ensure that everything is working the way it should.
Top 6 Ways to Enhance Garage Security with a Vector Home Alarm System
Outdoor Vector Security Camera – Keep an eye on who approaches your garage doors and monitor activity. Most outdoor security cameras offer 1080P HD resolution with motion detection and night vision.
Overhead Door Monitors – Always know whether the largest entry is open or closed. Tilt sensors use an inclinometer to detect the angle of the garage door. They send a signal to the control panel whether the overhead garage door is in an open or closed position.
Garage Door Openers – Allow automation and remote management of the overhead doors. With a wireless connection to the main home security system control panel, the doors can be controlled and even automated from the panel or right through the alarms system App.
Indoor Vector Home Security Camera – Monitor activity within the garage when access is gained. In our household, we have shipments and grocery deliveries inside the garage. With an inside camera, we can keep an eye on things remotely.
Exterior Door Contacts – Keep all vulnerable garage doors protected. Exterior and/or home entranceways should be protected.
Heat Detectors – Not affected by smoke and fumes…a heat detector senses rapid rises of temperature due to fire. This is especially important in homes with an attached garage.
So, if the budget allows…updating or installing a home security system that includes garage door security can be well worth the investment!

Do I need a permit to install a Vector Alarm?
Is it a necessity to procure a burglar alarm permit to put in a Vector alarm system?
As it happens, you don’t need a permit when the system is not going to be professionally monitored. Even so, because the Vector Alarm system will be remotely supervised with the purpose of making use of emergency response assistance, quite a few local cities would require a permit. In most situations, this consists of standard application in conjunction with your hometown police or sheriff’s dept together with some sort of minimal service fee.
One will probably be asked to deliver the name, address and phone number of Vector Home Security, together with monitoring station, in cases where the two providers might be different. Anywhere permits are required, virtually all towns will be needing a one time charge to enroll an individual’s system, although many towns mandate an annual renewal as well. With regard to cities with high robbery as well as false alarm rates, failure to register can result in a refusal to respond to places that haven’t got a security alarm permit…although this really is pretty exceptional.
Nonetheless, you might be subject to greater penalties and fees should police, fire as well as emergency medical assistance end up being dispatched to a residence with no permit in cities in which one is requested. Regardless if a permit is normally procured, the majority of communities are likely to assess fees with respect to multiple false alarms. Generally communities maintain strategies in place where your 1st One to two dispatches usually don’t require fees.
Most Vector security reviews fail to bring it up, but, after that penalties and fees much of the time rise from $25-50 to your 1st enforceable offense…to $100-200 for consequent recurring infractions. As a consequence, it is recommended to that Vector Home Security system owners speak with his or her own local area police department, determine what permits are required, obtain a comprehensive comprehension of the neighborhood policies and be certain that they consider necessary approaches in avoiding false alarms.
How to avoid false alarms with Vector Home Security Systems...
Methods to Help Avoid False Alarms with Vector Alarm Systems
As mentioned above, in our Vector Reviews FAQs, false alarms end up resulting in steep fees and penalties.
The vast majority of calls received by law enforcement spring from false alarms. Because of this, a large percentage of cities charge penalties and fees to residences after they meet or exceed a certain quantity of false alarms.
To prevent this from impacting you, these are some ideas for preventing a false alarm with your Vector Security system. Immediately following are a number of ideas to help you avoid false alarms.
Avoiding False Alarms
• Be sure everyone is familiar with the right way to disarm the security alarm. Your alarm system will have a master passcode, together with a number of supplemental user codes that may be programmed into the system. Attempt to make certain everyone knows his or her code and learns how to disarm the security system.
• Ensure that everyone is also fully aware of the password. If there is an alarm, the central monitoring station operators are going to generally call your home for starters and request the security password to confirm that the person replying to is an authorized user. In the event of an alarm, if the individual responding to the call is not able to provide the proper password, the police would be sent.
• Check to see that every door and window is properly shut prior to arming the system. Any entrance that has been left somewhat ajar can be blown open while you are away and set off the alarm.
• Check that all devices are installed properly and in the most suitable positions. Motion detectors must be placed at a height of 6’ as well as away from fans, heating elements, fireplaces, and air conditioning units.
• Consider things that would likely trigger a motion detector. It’s not just pets. Air conditioning units can cause fluttering curtains or plants…even helium balloons, which can be carried within the house by means of air currents, can trigger a motion detector. Ensure that they are tied down and removed from the areas covered by motions.
• Preferably, your pets should be confined to areas apart from motion detectors. In the event this is simply not plausible, you can find “pet-friendly” or “pet-immune” detectors which often can screen out smaller pets under 40, 50 even 80 lbs. Motion sensors can be installed so as to provide pet alleys where pets can move freely about. Another option is to make use of glass break sensors in place of motions.
• You should switch out batteries when needed. Most security systems use Lithium-Ion batteries which actually have, at a minimum, a 2-year anticipated lifespan.
Your Vector Home Security App will generally notify you as soon as the batteries are getting low and additionally alert you should there be nearly 1 month of usable life. It is advisable to have surplus batteries available and switch out them promptly. Your system may even advise you should there be any problems with sensors. In the event that you have a system error warning, conduct a status check to check out the sensor.
Speak to your Vector Alarm System rep if it seems not to be working. Save your user manuals/codes/passwords in a protected designated location in which they could be checked when necessary. But, the right way to avoid false alarms is to utilize your system consistently and make sure that everybody understands the right way to operate the system.

Questions to ask yourself prior to selecting a Vector Home Security System

Considering that you’re getting a 3 or five-year commitment, it’s important to take into consideration a variety of concerns aside from Vector reviews before signing on the dotted line. Make sure that you have a clear understanding of your contract before making a decision.
DIY versus Professional Installation?
One of the first factors is whether or not you want to install the unit personally or just spend money on a professional installation. Until recently, systems had to be hard wired into your house. This could involve drilling along with cutting holes in your walls, fishing electrical wires, complex mounting, and considerable programming.
These days, most of the equipment that is installed is wireless, which is more feature-rich, particularly user-friendly, can be managed from a smartphone (for example, if you have the Vector security app) …and simple for the average person to install. The better DIY alarm companies will pre-program your complete system prior to mailing it out, to make certain that all the end-user has got to do is place the devices and get in touch with them to have the system initialized.
While Vector Security reviews still claim to have issues with installations, in excess of 90% of homeowners observed our best Do it yourself security alarm systems from Frontpoint or Protect America were simple to set up!
Benefits associated with Do it yourself
• Absolutely no Installation Expenses – Help you save 100s • Lower Add-on Equipment Expenses – Typically nearly half
• Virtually no Waiting or Appointment time – You don’t need to set time aside from work
• Enhances System Knowledge
• Simple and easy to Relocate
Advantages of Expert Set up
• A reduced amount of Time and effort
• More Knowledge
Even though an expertly installed system might involve a bit less effort, a large percentage of property owners that got DIY alarms found that the systems were not difficult to put up, user-friendly and saved these folks a substantial figure compared to a professionally installed system. And, unlike most companies that professionally install systems, DIY alarms are perfect for apartment security systems and renters.
In the event you select professional set up, and have considered Vector Security Reviews, you may want to consider a more established home security company such as ADT Home Security.
If not, make sure that you determine how experienced the Vector security system specialist is as well as if they have previously been background checked and also undergone drug screening. Make sure you ask if Vector uses their own personnel or uses 3rd party subcontractors. Utilizing subcontractors is not actually automatically bad (they can even possess more practical experience than company personnel) but make sure they should have undergone extensive screening prior to letting them into your home.
Nationwide service or Local/Regional Service
Consideration should be given to what happens if one needs to relocate outside of the Vector Home Security service area. Vector Security reviews express customer frustration with contracts being enforced when they were relocated outside the service area. This can mean huge contract termination fees. The Vector monitoring center reaction times are normally determined from the time an alert is received to the instance the monitoring center calls the house to verify the alert. This time really should turn out to be under a minute.
In cases where nobody picks up from the home, typically scenarios, they’re going to try to speak to anybody listed on the emergency call list …and they then dispatch the authorities.
