DIY Install
Both Ring and Blink have a lineup of wireless cameras and components which are simple to install. There is no drilling or wiring involved (in most situations) and they have provided clear concise easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions that make installation a snap-even for the less technologically inclined. Each company also provides how-to videos to make it simple and streamlined for anyone to install their own system… without the expense or need to hire a professional.
Affordable
Because there is no expensive professional installation required, both companies are able to provide effective and affordable video monitoring solutions for the average household. The equipment costs are reasonable and there are no expensive or long-term contracts required. Both companies offer reasonably priced cloud-based storage.
Indoor and Outdoor Cameras
Both Blink and Ring help you stay on top of what is happening- both inside and outside of your home. Whether you are just looking for a “Nanny Cam” to keep an eye (and ear) on a toddler, looking to thwart porch pirates, or want full-fledged inside and perimeter video monitoring capabilities…both companies have affordable solutions available.
Video Quality
Gone are the days of grainy grey-scale video in 480p or 720p. Both Ring and Blink offer a full lineup of cameras, all of which record clear, crisp full-color footage in 1080p HD.
Two-Way Talk
Want to be able to communicate to the person (or pet) on the other side of the lens? Both companies have you covered by offering two-way talk capabilities on their devices.
Alexa Compatibility
As both companies are owned by Amazon, it comes as no great surprise that they are Alexa compatible. This means that you can easily connect, view and manage your devices using voice commands on your mobile phone and any other Alexa supported device such as the Echo Show, Fire TV, and Fire Tablets.
Night Vision
Cameras are all equipped with night vision so that you can get at least a limited range of view in darkness. For superior night vision outside of the home, both companies now have an outdoor floodlight camera solution as well.
Motion-Activated
Their home security cameras are equipped with built-in motion sensors. They are set up to automatically begin recording when the motion sensors detect motion. This saves storage space, as the camera records only the activity that matters, not continually day and night.
Remote Connectivity
Both companies offer mobile apps so that the cameras can be viewed and managed remotely.
Cloud Storage
Both Ring and Blink offer identical, no-contract cloud storage programs so that you can store and review video clips. Both are reasonably priced at $3/month per camera or $10 for Unlimited. Annual discounts are available, as well.
In addition, Blink offers a local storage solution….which brings us to our next section.
Key Differences Between Ring and Blink
Equipment Selection
While both Blink and Ring started out with fairly limited product offerings, Ring has expanded its equipment portfolio more aggressively. They now offer a variety of video doorbell options, inside cameras, outside cameras, floodlight cameras….and most importantly an ever-expanding line-up of home intrusion products.
Although Blink has expanded their offerings as well….they have adopted a bit more limited focus geared to more cost-effective video products and they have chosen (thus far) not to enter the home intrusion and automation field.
Technology
While both companies provide quality equipment, Ring has a significant edge when it comes to incorporating more advanced technology.
The Ring Advanced Motion Detection does a better job of screening out false positives, the Ring Floodlight Camera is significantly brighter and The Ring Video Doorbell yields a greater field of vision. All of these things come at a price, however. This leads us to…
Value
This is a subjective term depending on how you you decide to define value. If “value” is measured in terms of providing quality equipment with more basic functionality in the most cost-effective means…one might give the nod to Blink. However, if one appreciates some of the additional benefits of more advanced technology, then one might find more value in Ring.
Local Storage Capability – How to Eliminate Blink Subscription Costs
One major difference that provides a clear distinction between the two, is that Blink offers the user a choice of either Cloud storage (the pricing is identical to Ring) or local storage. You can get basic video clip storage without incurring any Blink subscription costs.
Thankfully, for a bit extra (currently $35 retail…but, included as a bundle in select packages), one can avoid the monthly recurring charge (between $3-$10/mo.) Cloud storage charge.
The Sync Module 2 can hold up to 256GB of storage (flash drives sold separately) and will support up to 10 Blink cameras.
Professional Monitoring
Another major distinction between the two is that Ring provides an ecosystem in which one can seamlessly integrate the video camera system into a full-fledged, professionally monitored intrusion and home automation system. The Ring Protect Pro package is available for only $20/mo. and includes Cloud storage.
Blink does not offer that option. It is, however, a great alternative to save some serious coin on the video component when coupled with one of our best home security companies.
Ring vs Blink Camera Battery Life
If you are going to be installing either a Blink or Ring Camera that is wireless, the battery life is also an important consideration.
When it comes to battery life, there are a number of factors that can impact real-world battery life-such as temperature, settings, and how much the cameras are being used. So, it is important to take the “average” battery life with a grain of salt.
However, the Blink camera battery life specs are significantly better.
When comparing Ring vs Blink camera battery life, one can expect Blink batteries to perform “up to 2 years” vs. a claimed battery life of 6-12 months with a wireless Ring camera.
Depending on usage, I often cut those numbers in half to gauge realistic real-world expectations.
Ring vs Blink Camera Installation
We Installed and Tested Blink Cameras and the Blink Video Doorbell and Here’s What We Found
One of the great things about both Ring and Blink Security cameras is the ease of setup. Both Blink and Ring Cameras are designed so that the average consumer can easily install them in under an hour.
As there were a number of Blink promotions running at the time this article was published, we purchased an entire Blink camera system so that we could expand the protection around our own home and experience the installation and setup firsthand.
We were able to configure a fairly comprehensive camera system for well under $400.
This would include:
1-Blink Doorbell Camera
2- Indoor Blink Minis
1 – Blink Sync Module 2
1 – Outdoor Blink Camera
1 – Blink Outdoor Camera Mount
1 – Blink Outdoor Floodlight Camera
This would afford us enough cameras to cover the main living area in the home, the interior of the garage, the front entrance area, and substantial coverage for the perimeter of the home.
The Sync Module 2 would enable us to store the video locally, without the need to pay a monthly storage fee. We had the requisite USB drives necessary for storing the footage already.
Packaging, Setup, and Installation
We were impressed with the packaging and the ease with which even an aging “Boomer” like me was able to set up the system. The packaging even has QR codes to take you directly to Step by Step quick start instructions.
Just snap a shot of the QR with your phone…and it walks you right through the process.
The first step is to download the Blink Home Monitor app and create an account. One minor complaint I had was that this had to be done on the app.
I prefer to be able to do this on the desktop – which is easier for one who struggles with inputting characters with fumble fingers…but, I digress. The process is straightforward and simple.
Once the app is activated, it is a matter of scanning the QR codes and adding them to the “System”, which will enable you to manage the settings of all the connected devices.
If you wish to apply unique settings to specific devices, you can set up a separate system.
Adding devices was simply a matter of scanning the individual QR codes on the device (or adding the serial # manually) and following the prompts to add each piece to your wireless network.
Once the app indicated that the process is complete, it was simply a matter of returning to the home screen and renaming the cameras (which are listed as serial numbers) based on where we planned to place them.
The interior cameras were strategically placed near power outlets in the living room and garage. The doorbell and outdoor cameras were all battery-operated. So there was no drilling required.
The only restriction in placing the cameras was that they must be placed where there is sufficient signal strength of the wi-fi network. We have a pretty good mesh network so that was not an issue.
However, one should be aware that any wireless camera system will require a connection through the wi-fi network. In some cases, this may require the use of a wi-fi extender. This is true of any wireless camera. The camera is only as good as the wi-fi connectivity at your location.
Likewise, setting up the outdoor Blink cameras is simply a matter of scanning the QR code and adding it to the system, installing the battery, and screwing the included hardware to the wall.
Basically, Ring installation and setup are pretty much the same…so when considering whether to go with Ring or Blink, the only real distinction is that you can get professional installation with Ring for $99.
Blink vs Ring – Top 5 “Must Have” Camera Features
Regardless of which company you happen to favor, there are certain features that either Ring or Blink Cameras must have to be considered competitive in today’s home security camera market.
These features are:
- Motion Activated – The Best Security Cameras have motion sensors that trigger when the camera records
- Resolution – Modern security cameras typically offer 1080P resolution.
- Night Vision – Top security cameras are equipped with infrared LED lights to illuminate images in low or no light conditions.
- Field of Vision – The area that is covered by the camera…should be at least 120°.
- Two-Way Talk – The ability to speak and hear through the camera is now a fairly standard feature.
While both Blink and Ring cameras incorporate all these features, the Ring cameras offer more sophisticated motion detection and a larger field of vision.
Of course, the pricing reflects that, so one must decide if the benefits outweigh the costs…
Blink vs Ring Indoor Cameras
Blink vs Ring Indoor Cameras Overview
When it comes to indoor cameras, both Blink and Ring offer entry-level wi-fi cameras that are available in either battery-operated models or traditional plug-in power sources. The Blink Mini depicted above is the most affordable option at just $34.99. The Ring Indoor Camera comes in at $59.99.
The full range of cameras offered by both companies delivers crystal clear images with 1080P HD resolution. If you are thinking about investing in a security camera system, this is likely one of your primary concerns. Anything lower than that can produce grainy results when trying to pick up details like license plates or facial features.
Simiarly, both companies also offer completely wireless, battery-powered cameras, which can be seen at the bottom of the page. As with the entire line-up, Blink is the more cost-effective solution.
In addition to night-vision and two-way talk, they both include motion detection. This is critical as motion will trigger the camera to record and send notifications to your smartphone through their respective mobile app.
The clips can be stored in the Cloud with either company. They both include a free month of storage and have additional programs available for $3/mo. per camera (or $10/mo. for unlimited).
Ironically, Blink offers more storage options. This is an important distinction, as they have local storage capabilities, that Ring does not. If you want to pass on the monthly Cloud storage bill, you can store up to 256GB (purchased separately) on a flash with the addition of the Blink Sync Module Two.
While Ring does not offer local storage capability. However, in addition to a bit more sophisticated motion detection, the Ring Stick Up Cam does offer a wider 140º Field of View
October 2022 Update
NEW! The Blink Mini Pan-Tilt Camera
The Blink vs Ring battle continues to heat up!
Blink has recently introduced a new product to their indoor camera line-up…The Blink Mini Pan-Tilt Camera.
Now, for the same price as the Ring Indoor Cam ($59.99), Blink customers can have the added capability of 360º viewing.
Already have a Blink Mini? You can purchase a Blink Mini Pan-Tilt mount separately for just $29.99. (both have October 20, 2022 launch date….available to order here )
To be sure, this is a tremendous value and dramatically increases the capability and versatility of the Blink Mini Indoor Camera.

Ring vs Blink Outdoor Cameras Overview
Moving on to outdoor cameras, Blink and Ring offer a variety of outdoor video monitoring solutions. The Blink Outdoor Camera shown above is once again, available for just $74.99. (and is currently available with Sync Module 2 at no extra)
It is a completely wireless, outdoor-rated, battery-operated camera that is equipped with motion detection, night vision, and two-way talk.
Ring has a similarly equipped model, the Ring Stick Up with similar specifications and a wider field of view for $99.99-but, no local storage capability.
The divergence is more pronounced as you get into outdoor spotlight cameras.
The Ring Spotlight Camera seen above is a self-contained outdoor camera with built-in LED lights that generates 2000 lumens. It has all the standard features as well as an internal siren that can be remotely activated by the user after receiving a notification and determining that there is a threat.
Pretty neat feature…and the total is $199.99.
Blink takes a different route. They offer a Floodlight Mount to which the Blink Outdoor Camera is attached. While it has a lower lumen output of 700, they claim a far superior battery life of up to 2 years…as opposed to 2-6 months with Blink.
This unit is available for an additional $39.99.
For our test, we elected to go with the Blink outdoor cameras. We picked up the 2 camera kit, which also included a sync module, at no charge. We got an outdoor Blink mount kit and set that one up with the existing motion light in the back of the house.
On the side of the house, we paired the other camera with the optional Blink Floodlight Mount. We found the 700 lumens more than adequate to illuminate the side entryway and felt that it represents an outstanding value for the money.
They were both a snap to add to the system and the mounts were sturdy and a cinch to install.
Both companies offer solar charging options as well. Additional models and options can be seen at the bottom of the page.
Common Blink vs Ring Outdoor Camera Questions
How well does the Night Vision work without a spotlight?
Both Ring and Blink have PIR night vision that works within 25 or 30 feet. As long as the area that you wish to monitor is within that range…they work fine.
We installed one of our Blink outdoor cameras without the optional spotlight add-on and were quite happy with the results…
Clearly, this backyard bandit prowling the premises in the wee hours of the morning was not going to evade detection by our clandestine Blink backyard outdoor camera.
Blink vs Ring Outdoor Cameras- How well do they withstand the elements?
Both cameras are weatherproof and designed to work outdoors.
While it is always a best practice to try and mount the camera under the eaves or an overhang, this simply wasn’t an option in our situation.
We mounted our Blink outdoor camera where it would be fully exposed to the elements. It weathered over 4 inches of torrential wind-blown rain in the past 10 days…and appears no worse for the wear.
We’ll see how it weathers a harsh Maine winter…

- Local Storage Capability
- Price
Blink has just recently introduced the Blink Outdoor Wired Floodlight Camera…and frankly, by almost any reasonable standards, most people would agree that they have hit it out of the park.
While some might argue that they have a preference for the Ring App, other than already owning multiple devices on the Ring platform or preferring their aesthetics…one would be hard-pressed to justify choosing Ring over the Blink outdoor floodlight camera.
The Ring outdoor wired floodlight camera offers a slightly wider field of vison (143 vs 140), a significantly higher Lumen output (2600 vs 2000), the ability to store video clips locally AND does it for half the price!

Blink Doorbell Cam vs Ring Video Doorbell Overview
Ring pretty much pioneered the video doorbell industry about 10 years ago when they introduced the “DoorBot”.
They certainly haven’t rested on their laurels since… and after rebranding as Ring, they have gone on to expand their product line to include a variety of indoor and outdoor cameras, along with their line of home security and automation products.
When comparing Ring vs. Blink side by side, in markets in which they are both competing, the video doorbell segment is clearly dominated by Ring.
However, Blink continues to punch above its weight class and delivers outstanding value in the Blink Video Doorbell. This 1080p HD Video Doorbell Camera can be hard-wired to existing doorbell wiring or operate off of 2AA Lithium batteries which are rated for up to 2 years of normal operation.
It includes motion detection, 2-way audio, night vision, and when paired with the Sync Module 2 (which you can get at no cost with some of the other camera offers we have shared above), you can have on-demand live video and 2-way audio.
And, right now, you get all this for just $39.99! (Limited time offer subject to change…see the Promo Box below)
Both companies are, of course, Alexa compatible…and come with a Free Trial of their respective Cloud storage for video clips…but, only Blink offers local storage.
The starting price of the standard Ring Video Doorbell is considerably higher. (currently $99.99) However, it offers a wider field of vision and superior, customizable motion detection.
But Ring doesn’t stop there, they offer a full range of video doorbells that include advanced features such as:
- Dual Wi-Fi Band Connectivity
- Interchangeable Face Plates
- Hot-Swappable Removeable Battery Packs
- Power over Ethernet Connection
- Professional Installation
With prices ranging from $99 to $349, there is something to fit every budget of the more discerning consumer looking for next-generation technology.
Additional models and options can be seen at the bottom of the page.
Ring vs Blink Video Doorbell Camera…Wants vs Needs?
When it comes down to making a choice between Ring and Blink doorbell cameras, it might be a matter of economics or determining whether or not you can justify spending additional dollars to gain the benefits that the additional features will set you back.
In our situation, (get details in our Blink Video Doorbell Review) the field of vision of the Blink Doorbell camera was more than adequate. The resolution would be the same, regardless of whether we used Ring or Blink. And, the distance from the road and the frequency of visitors we have at the front door, means that any advanced artificial intelligence features would have little value.
Because we were not going to be using the existing doorbell wiring, the Blink camera battery life was a primary consideration…and the Blink wireless cameras claim a far superior battery life. That certainly tipped the scales in their favor…so in this scenario, it was an easy choice to select the Blink doorbell vs Ring.
However, your situation might be very different. There are many factors that come into play when deciding whether Blink or Ring best suits your needs.
Blink Doorbell Cam Installation
One of the advantages of the Blink Doorbell Camera offered, at the time of this review, was the fact that the Blink Doorbell Cam could be installed wirelessly. This was a major consideration for us…as our older home doorbell wiring was not compatible. See our Blink Video Doorbell review for details.
Blink Video Doorbell -a bargain at under $50!
The X-Factors – Blink vs Ring Considerations
Budget
Clearly, Blink is a better overall fit for the budget conscientious consumer.
Features
Conversely…Ring offers more features and advanced technology.
Selection
Ring offers a wider array of products from which to choose. Additionally, they carry a line of home security and automation products which enables one to include the cameras and home security in a single platform.
Storage
While they both allow you to store video in the Cloud at a fairly affordable rate ($3-$10/mo.), only Blink allows you to store video locally without a monthly recurring charge.
Philosophy
While Blink seems to follow the KISS principle and endeavors to Keep it Simple and provide outstanding value at the most affordable pricing, Ring has adopted a more expansive approach.
They offer a wider selection of more feature-rich products that can work seamlessly together with a full security and home automation ecosystem.
While not as affordable as Blink, they are still very competitively priced.

Ring Alarm System
At this point, any Blink vs Ring alarm system comparison is impossible. While Ring has elected to expand its efforts to include an ecosystem that can encompass home automation, security, and video monitoring, Blink simply has chosen to limit its efforts to that which it does best.
There is equal merit to the practice of doing one thing…and doing it well.
However, our Blink vs Ring comparison would be remiss without at least mentioning the Ring Alarm System. We will review it more thoroughly sometime in the near future.
In a nutshell, the Ring Alarm is a very basic wireless security system that will seamlessly support the full line-up of Ring products. While it can function as a completely self-monitored system, it can be professionally monitored 24/7 for protection from police, fire, and medical emergencies.
The Ring Protect Pro is a great value at just $20/month.
Blink, of course, has no comparable service at this time. However, if one doesn’t mind using a separate App, Blink could be paired with one of our Best Rated Home Security Systems, which, would likely cost a bit more but would provide a great deal more overall value.
Storing video locally, will save any monthly storage charges and could provide the user.
Ring Alarm vs the Competition
A few advantages of combining Blink with one of our top-rated security companies would be:
- Experience – The best home security companies have many years of experience in supporting their products and protecting hundreds of thousands of families. They specialize in security. Ring is a brand new player.
- Equipment – The equipment offered by top alarm companies is superior and built by established suppliers.
- Professional Install Capability– Some of our top picks install the system- if you are uncomfortable with the DIY approach.
- Professional Monitoring – All of our best home security companies have 5 Diamond Rated monitoring stations with multiple redundancies.
- Smash and Grab Protection – Top-rated alarm companies offer some sort of crash and smash protection that prevents an intruder from just destroying the base unit so it can’t send a signal…
If you are contemplating doing more than cameras, these are but a few reasons why it makes sense to look into a company that specializes in home security before making a decision.
Either Blink or Ring can be used in conjunction with any security and home automation system. It just means managing the cameras through a separate app.
While Ring might offer a bit more convenience and a cheaper solution…it may not be the best way to provide security to protect your home and family.
It may make sense to get your cameras from either Blink or Ring…but look into one of the Top Ranked Security Companies for home security that you can count on. We have provided our security company selection tool to help you narrow down the choices.
Ring Car Cam
While Blink has chosen to focus on expanding and enhancing its budget home camera offering, Ring has elected to expand into new areas…namely the car dash cam space.
While we are looking to do a complete hands on expert review in the near future, we wanted to include a brief overview of the Ring Car Cam in this Blink vs Ring guide, as it underscores yet another differentiator when comparing Ring vs Blink.
What is the Ring Car Cam?
The Ring Car Cam is an innovative new technology that offers drivers unprecedented levels of security and peace of mind when it comes to protecting and monitoring your vehicle.
Equipped with a variety of features, this product provides users with the ability to monitor their vehicles 24/7.
As well as offering safety features, Ring Car Cam also allows users to track each other’s driving habits and provide real-time alerts in the event of an accident.
This section looks at how Ring Car Cam works, what it has to offer, and how it can benefit its users.
Ring Dash Cam Design And Features
The purpose of any dashcam is to provide a sense of security and safety in our modern world; an ever-changing landscape that has become increasingly unpredictable.
By integrating these devices with a smartphone app, users can enjoy advanced GPS tracking capabilities and cloud storage for photos and videos. Advanced motion detection systems can even allow for early warning alerts and assist in collision prevention.
These devices can even serve as eyes in the dark – providing night vision for previously unseen potential threats or hazards. With their combined strength, users have greater peace of mind knowing that no matter what lies ahead, they have a reliable companion in the journey towards safe passage.
Night Vision
The design and features of the ring car cam have been conducive to improved visibility and enhanced safety, no matter what time of day or night.
With its intuitive control panel, users can easily switch between day/night settings for optimized performance in any light condition. This quick installation process allows drivers to take advantage of this technology without spending too much effort on setup.
A big part of improved visibility lies within the camera’s ability to quickly adjust itself when entering environments with varying levels of light intensity.
When darkness falls, the ring car cam automatically adjusts its sensitivity level using advanced algorithms that improve image clarity and detail even under low lighting conditions.
As a result, drivers benefit from improved visibility which translates into enhanced safety – both during nighttime driving as well as regular daytime commutes.
Drivers can rest assured knowing that their vehicle is equipped with an efficient security device designed to monitor surroundings at all times.
Motion Detection
Motion detection is a feature of many modern dashcams. It enables the user to be instantly alerted when motion is detected in their vicinity.
Additionally, mounting options are available to facilitate installation in any desired location.
Furthermore, power supply sources must be considered when installing a motion detector; most models require an additional power source such as batteries or direct wiring into the vehicle’s electrical system. In terms of convenience and reliability, it is essential that these factors are taken into account when selecting the ideal model for one’s needs.
Moving on from motion detection, automatic recording is another important aspect of some ring car cams.
Automatic Recording
With an advanced camera system installed on cars such as the ring car cam, drivers may feel safer knowing that their vehicle is safeguarded from potential theft or vandalism. To take full advantage of this feature, you will need to connect it permanently to the power source.
Video quality varies depending on the resolution settings but most models that capture footage at 1080p HD and higher resolutions can discern license plate numbers.
The footage captured by these devices can then be stored in cloud services so they are accessible even if something were to happen to your car while you’re away from home.
As more people become aware of what options exist for keeping their vehicles safe, implications for the automotive industry could include increased demand for better-equipped security systems that feature motion detectors and automatic recording capabilities.
Conclusion
The introduction of Ring car cam technology shows Ring’s commitment to providing comprehensive security solutions, that even extend to the automotive industry.
The Ring Car Cam is capable of providing night vision, motion detection, and automatic recording capabilities which can have an impact on vehicle safety and security.

What is the difference between the Blink 3 and Blink 4 Outdoor Cameras?
Blink 4 Outdoor Camera vs Blink 3 Outdoor Camera…is it worth upgrading?
There are a number of differences between the Blink 3 Outdoor Camera and the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera
While both cameras offer 1080HD resolution, the Blink 4 outdoor Camera has enhanced low-light clarity. This sharpens the image and provides significantly better performance in low-light conditions.
Additionally, the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera offers several notable upgrades compared to its predecessor, the Blink 3 Outdoor Camera. One significant improvement is enhanced motion detection as well as smart person detection. These features will effectively decrease the number of unnecessary notifications which improves user experience and will also extend the already superior battery life. (one of the major advantages in most Ring vs Blink comparison reviews)
Another notable difference is the improved battery life of the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera. While the Blink 3 Outdoor Camera already had impressive battery performance, the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera can last even longer without needing a recharge. This extended battery life ensures that the camera remains operational for an extended period, reducing the need for frequent maintenance.
Additionally, the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera introduces a wider field of view compared to its predecessor. With a 143-degree field of view, the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera can cover a larger area, reducing blind spots and providing better overall surveillance coverage.
Considering these upgrades, it may be worth upgrading to the Blink 4 Outdoor Camera if you value enhanced clarity, fewer unnecessary notifications, longer battery life, and a wider field of view. However, if these improvements are not significant factors for your specific needs, sticking with the Blink 3 Outdoor Camera might be a more cost-effective option. Ultimately, the decision to upgrade will depend on your individual requirements and priorities.
