Safest Cities in Arizona

Home of the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a hot, arid climate with plenty of year-round activities for golfers and outdoor enthusiasts.

The average state crime ratings are:

AZ Violent Crimes

Arizona State Average Violent Crimes

(per 100,000 residents)

AZ Property Crimes

Arizona State Average Property Crimes

(per 100,000 residents)

However, Arizona is home to a number of communities with outstanding reputations for low crime rates which are well below these numbers.

Based on the very latest FBI UCR findings, (released in Q3 of 2019) half of the  safest neighborhoods in Arizona on our list experienced less than 20 violent crimes in 2018.

Florence retained the top spot, while San Luis, Chino Valley and Lake Havasu City all broke into the Top 10.  Maricopa jumped  from the #10 position last year…all the way to the #2 position this year.

If you are looking to relocate and make a home for you and your family in The Grand Canyon State, this list of Arizona’s safest cities is a good place to start.

Following are the top cities with populations above 5,000 which have been recognized as the safest communities in Arizona.

A Few Facts About Arizona's Safest Cities

Fun Facts About The Safest Cities in Arizona

A community is more than just low violent crime rates and property crime rates. While safety is an important consideration, click below and you’ll find a few tidbits of information on some of Arizona’s safest places to live.

Florence

Florence can be found 61 miles SE of Phoenix and it’s one of the oldest towns in Pinal County. On top of that, it’s seen as a National Historic District with more than 25 buildings being a part of the National Register of Historic Places. It’s also a great, safe place to live in, with a very low crime rate.

Maricopa

Maricopa is found in the Gila River Valley. It has 58k+ residents and it’s the largest city in that community. It was one of the major relay stations in the region and played a major role in the SouthWest development. This is known to be one of the safest cities in Arizona, and it continues to impress with its unique appeal.

Sahuarita

Sahuarita is a very safe town in Pima County and widely known for its unique style and geography. It has a great history ranging from thousands of years ago to WWII and Cold War. More and more people come here thanks to the great prices, incredible living costs and amenities

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley only had a couple of violent crimes in recent years and very few property crimes. Aside from that, the location is incredible, you have the mountain nearby and there are 8 resorts here. Tourism is very popular here and a great source of income for locals.

Somerton

Somerton has low crime rates and it can be found in Yuma Country. Its economy is widely based on tourism, medical services and agriculture.

Thatcher

Thatcher has under 5000 residents, but it’s very well protected and it has stellar emergency response and police systems. That helps maintain a very low crime rate. Additionally, the town itself is known for its great school and affordable house pricing as well.

Oro Valley

Oro Valley was incorporated in 1974 and it has grown quite a bit in the past 2 decades. The beautiful Santa Catalina Mountains, combined with affordable living and housing costs are appealing to a lot of people. Here you can also find a great Golf course too. And yes, the city itself has a very low crime rate, not to mention there are 10+ tech firms here as well.

San Luis

San Luis was created in 1930 and it had the opening of a regular border crossing station. Within the past 20 years it managed to increase immensely, thanks to commercial and residential, but also industrial growth. Despite the higher number of residents, San Luis still has a low crime rate.

Chino Valley

Chino Valley is known as the site for the first territorial capital of Arizona, which eventually moved to Prescott. The town itself was incorporated in 1970 and it always had a rather low crime and theft rate. Additionally, the community here is very friendly, there’s a large focus on education, and you can find multiple vintage businesses here too.

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu City is rather large, with around 52.5k residents. Despite that, the crime rates here are very low. Additionally, you can find a large lake here, and many consider the city a wonderful event destination especially during the spring break, but also during the winter months.

Safest Arizona Cities with Populations over 50K

10 of the Safest Cities in Arizona with Populations over 50,000

In most cases, smaller towns and cities are known for having lower crime rates.  Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for larger cities to have some of the safest neighborhoods in Arizona, even though some urban districts within the city may have much higher crime rates.

Due to the fact that larger cities typically struggle with many challenges that smaller towns and communities might not have to deal with, The Home Security Advisor recognizes some of the larger cities in Arizona that have an outstanding track record for providing safe communities for Arizonans.

Casa Grande and Chandler are newcomers on the list this year.  Lake Havasu City advaced 3 positions into the top slot this year..and was the only city to rank in both categories.

Methodology – How the Top 50 were Chosen

To determine the most secure towns and cities throughout Arizona, our team reviewed the most up-to-date (2018) FBI Uniform Crime Report results with respect to towns and cities with five-thousand residents or higher, who recorded their crime data..

We considered both “Violent” (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and “Property Crimes” (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft).

In order to reflect the seriousness of the crimes, these figures were weighted. Property crimes were factored by .50 and were added to the violent crimes.

The sum of the two was then divided by the population in the community. For comparison purposes, we normalized the mathematical finding to reflect weighted criminal offenses per 100,000.

The Best Places to Live in Arizona – Crime Ratings

While it’s true no rating system is infallible, this provides a very good mathematical gauge of the overall safety and security in the community. If you’re considering transferring to Arizona, these residential districts are amongst the top rated safest towns and cities within which one could take up residence.

Keep in mind that not every town and city reports their records. These communities were not included in the FBI report.

Additionally, certain areas inside any community may very well be much less hazardous compared to others. This is especially valid in more robust cities. Therefore, one needs to check into specific neighborhoods within the community and communicate with law enforcement to obtain a better overall impression of the security and safety on a local level.

To get more detailed information on keeping your family and home safer, we recommend you take a look at some basic Strategies for Home Security…and consider a top rated professionally monitored home security system.

Final Thoughts and FAQs

Even if you are fortunate enough to live in one of the safest cities in Arizona…the threat of violent crime exists virtually everywhere. At The Home Security Advisor, our goal is to provide you with the information you need to protect the things you care most about.

While you might be statistically less likely to be a victim of crimes in certain areas, those statistics mean nothing if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Keeping Safe on the Streets of Arizona

Personal Safety Tips

Whether you live in one of the safest places in Arizona or one of the more dangerous areas, it is important to be security-conscious and practice good personal safety habits.

It doesn’t necessarily matter where you live, the possibility of being victimized by a crime is ever-present. While there are no guarantees that you won’t ever experience an assault, robbery ….or worse- there are many steps that you can take to make yourself less vulnerable.

1.  Be AWARE of your surroundings.   Learn to recognize and react quickly to potentially dangerous situations.

2.  Demonstrate assertive body language.  Potential assailants are more likely to prey on the weak, defenseless, and timid. Walk with confidence and a sense of purpose.

3.  Walk in well-lit, highly-traveled areas.    Avoid shortcuts through poorly lit parking lots, alleys, and wooded areas.

4.  Keep your cell phone charged.   You never know when you may need it to call for help in an emergency.

5.  Don’t display cash or any other inviting targets such as cell phones, flashy watches, tablets, or expensive jewelry.

Following these, and other recommended personal safety tips will help reduce the odds of becoming a target.

Keeping Children Safe

Not all threats to a child’s safety and well-being are a result of crime or criminal activity.

And regardless of where you live, no one is immune to the threats of accidental death or injury in and around the home.

Following are some reminders of how you can help provide a safer environment.

Child Safety Tips

  • Never Leave a Child Unattended in or Around Water
  • Childproof Electrical Outlets
  • Keep Small Items Out of Reach
  • Prevent Accidental Suffocation
  • Secure Chemicals and Cleaning Materials

Home Safety Tips

  • Secure Firearms and Ammunition
  • Install and Check Smoke and CO Detectors
  • Secure Windows and Stairways
  • Pet Safety
  • Be Prepared for an Emergency

We have elaborated on these topics, in greater detail in our posts on child safety and home safety.

In addition, you may want to consider a neighborhood watchdog tool such as Family Watchdog.  This is a free app that will help you to identify registered sex offenders in your neighborhood…or any areas where your child might frequent-such as schools, playgrounds, or friends’ homes.  You might be surprised at what this mapping tool will uncover in even the safest places in Florida.

How Can I Make My Home Safer?

Home Security Tips

Here are some simple steps you can take to help protect your home from the threat of burglary.

1. Close and lock all doors and windows at night and when you are away from home.

2.  Have deadbolt locks installed.

3. Secure sliding glass doors.

4. Eliminate hiding places by keeping shrubbery trimmed near entrances and windows.

5.  Make sure to illuminate the exterior of the home at night.
